i'm in the process of restoring an atc70, the tank is filled with hard rust. is there a trick to get this crap out or should i just get a new tank? i'm kind of partial to the metal tanks and they are hard to find.........

I have heard that you can put a couple handfuls of nuts and bolts in the tank and shake it around a bit to loosen up the rust.. I havent tried it yet as I just recently bought a machine with a metal tank...I have also heard good things about using this stuff:

I bought a gallon of stuff called "evaporust". It is enviromentally friendly, no fumes, wont hurt the paint, and you can dump it down the sink. I filled my 70 tank (off of the bike). (It says it works better if it is heated) and set the tank on top of a heat duct for a day. Came out great. No more rust. Without treating it will come back, but I just keep gas in it. I figure if I redo it every year or two no big deal. I did my 350x tank too.

I used Por15. www.por15.com

worked for me

I would reccomend getting it professionally done though...Por15 is good if you're not restoring the tank. It puts a liner down similar to that of RhinoLining. It isn't pretty, but it is TOUGH.

I use acid to get rid of the rust...then I seal it up after it's clean & the acid is neutralized.

Drop some acid and all your troubles will go away... :lala:

Do a google search on "cleaning out old rusty gas tank"
The common theme you will find is to use ACID, phosphoric or muriatic and let that eat the rust, use MEK methyl ethyl ketone to clean and seal with POR-15, kreem or some other product to coat the inside of the tank. If you buy kreem kit you get all three products. If you FOLLOW directions exactly it works fine, if not you will have problems with the coating not sticking on the inside of the tank.

WARNING ACID is not easy to work with and is highly toxic. Do your homework.

Another thought is to take the tank to an engine builder and let them hot tank the tank. Then thoroughly clean and seal with POR-15 cream whatever....

paint thinner and some rocks work, bolt nuts work too.
