A repost to recap all the recent questions about engine swapping, etc:

Does anyone know what other engines will fit in my 200x frame? atv or motorcycle engines.

-------------------------
85 200x project 82 185s

Direct fitments.......

ATC185
ATC185S
ATC200
ATC200S
ATC200E (low range model.....you dont want this in an X frame......or I hope not.)
ATC200M (electric start version of the S engine)

There are very many dirtbike engines that will bolt into your frame but the only one made after the early '80s was the XR200 and XR200R. Remember that while it will bolt right in, and has a six speed transmission, that it has a backwards kickstarter and requires serious cutting of the rear fenders.............or remove them each time you crank it over.

Also, there are a few different XR200s in the early 1980s.

The 1980-1984 XR200 will fit
The 1981-1983 and 1986-2002 XR200R will fit

The 1984-1985 XR200R WILL NOT fit. These use an RFVC head like a 400EX and have dual carburetors!! The engine bolt pattern isn't even similar to the other XR200 models.

The '81-'83 ATC200 replaced the 1980 ATC185. It is the same basic ATC with changes to the piston, rings, and cylinder. It has a recoil start ONLY, 5 speed auto clutch transmission. Chain drive.

The '82-'83 ATC200E BigRed was a model designed for the hunter. Frame is very similar to the 200 differing in body mount locations. This model also had front suspension. The engine's top end is identical to the standard 200, but the bottom end shares few parts. This engine had electric start and a 5 speed auto clutch tranmission, but also had a Hi-Lo sub transmission. This model is chain driven.

The '84 ATC200ES BigRed was identical to the '82-'83 version with the exception of the rear frame section and drive train. This model was shaft driven. This model also had reverse. It was only made this single year, along with the design of the shaft drive.

The '84-'86 ATC200S replaced the ATC185S. Same engine as the old standard ATC200. The chassis received a few- small changes along with new body work and a redesigned seat that swept onto the fuel tank.

The '84-'85 ATC200M replaced the ATC200E when the ATC200ES arrived. The chassis is from the '82-'83 ATC200E, but the engine was a mix of the standard 200 and 200E. It was a 200 engine with the electric start from the 200E. No subtransmission was used on this model.

If alot of things haven't been changed to your ATC over the years, here's a quik way to lead you in the right diretion of what ATC200 model you might have.

my 200s is an 84 but the plug is a ngk is number is dr8es-l
D8ES-L
DR8ES-L
D8EA
DPR8EA-9 [Most popular]

For a hotter heat range plug, replace all the number "8"s with 6 or 7.
For a colder heat range plug, replace all the number "8"s with a 9

Some of the plugs I listed above aren't offered in all of the heat ranges, but the DPR plug is. All the plugs I listed fit all 185 and 200 models regardless of model type or year model

have an 82 185s and a 200x, well parts to a 200x. I was wondering if I could make a 200x automatic out of my 185. Could I do this by boring out the 185 and using the x piston and such, or would I have to use a complete 200x top end with the 185 tranny? does that make sense?

You can swap everything in the top end.

The only big difference being the cylinder bore ofcourse.

Oh......and yes, the 185S tranny will bolt right into the X chassis.

would I have to use the 200x crank and/or connecting rod, or could I just put the 200x piston on the existing connecting rod. I would probably use a pre-86 top end.

You just use the 200X piston with the 185 rod already there.

You have to use the pre-86 X stuff on the top end. The '86-'87 models use entirely different engine parts.

Will the stock Honda harness control the Lifan engines? I see on eBay they come with the CDI, etc, but they want an extra $60 for the harness. Do the 200cc engine mount holes line up with 185/200cc Honda frames? It looks good in the pictures.

Do they make lifan motors bigger than 200cc or do they have big bore kits for them?

Would a top end from an '82 185s bolt onto a bottom end from a 1981 200? They look the same, so I'm leaning towards yes, but I want to be sure there won't be any issues with the crank stroke, etc.
