if i have the plug out of the motor should i see it spark when i try to crank it? its of course still hooked to the plug wire........

Yes! If everything is on...Though it helps in a nice darker area...

Just stating the obvious here, but it was grounded to the engine right? ;)

pretty sure it was grounded, i'm working on an atc70 if that helps out any...

pretty sure it was grounded, i'm working on an atc70 if that helps out any...There should be no "pretty sure" about it. Were you holding the metal portion of the sparkplug up against the metal fins on the engine? That's the easiest way to ground it.

nope, i had the damn thing on the frame. it needs to be on the motor huh?

The frame would be good if there is no paint on that spot, perhaps a bolt, but usually your best bet is the engine.
