The workaround for not having a spanner wrench is to stick a big screwdriver throught the holes in the sprocket into the notches in the end of the carrier. The carefully roll the trike forward or backwards to move the carrier.

There is a spanner in the OEM tool kit or Motion Pro sells a spanner for adjusting shock spring preload but either tool must be used carefully on the aluminum flange of the carrier, it's easy to mess up.

Look at the carrier. You will see that the axle hole is offset. When you turn the carrier in the swinger the axle moves forward and back. I do not remember which was is which off the top of my head.
Watch out for the disk brake bracket being stuck on the carrier. That is the problem I had with mine the last time.

That motion pro shock spanner tool works awesome. I ground on mine to make it fit better ( i squared the little finger, and opened up the mouth so it fit the carrier better) I use this on my 83 250R
