I recently picked up an '81 200 for parts and the guy had an extra engine that he threw in with it. He didn't know much about the extra engine; he got it in a similiar situation. Anyway, it is a 200cc (well, 192.xx), but I don't know if it was from a 200/200S. It has a spot for a starter to be installed and has a black recoil. Did the 200/200S ever come with electric start? Also, what goes where I have boxed in red?
Can anybody tell me about this engine?

Hello. That Motor Looks like it came off of a 2WD quad, like a recon or something. Maybe a "85 200S?

That is a Honda atc 200M motor, the 200M was made in both 1984 and 1985.

Definitely not a Recon!
Didn't they also sell a 200 Big Red with that engine that wasn't shaft drive? I know they sold one that was shaft drive and electric start. Definitely an 80s model 200 trike engine though!

I think the difference between the 200M motor and the 200es big red was reverse. Some of the big reds had a high/low subtranny too.

Ahh, ok, forgot they had reverse.

200ES has e-start, shaft drive, and a hi/low/reverse subtransmission
200E has e-start, chain drive, and a hi/low subtransmission
200M (this motor) has e-start, chain drive

Thats a good question. Looks like the spot for the coil wires to come out of but I see they are coming out behind that spot. I wonder if there is supposed to be a rubber plug in it? My manual (and extra 200M motor) are back at home so I am not much help.

Yeah thefox is right, the 82-83 200E has elec start, pull start, hi-low subtrans and a strange front sprocket. I am rebuilding one right now.

The problem with trying to use that (ES) engine is that it was made for the electric start model and so it has a different bottom end from your '81. The wiring doesn't match, and the starter wouldn't clear the frame in front.
I would take off the top end, get it mic'd up and bored/re-pistoned and rebuild the head so You can do an easy top-end swap to make your '81 primo. Use the bottom for clutch parts, nuts, bolts, etc. You could probably get at least $50 for the ES Pull starter on e-bay, that will help with the costs, too.
the hole is were the stator wires would come out.
