are they're any strong benefits of having an o-ring chain as opposed to a standard?

The O-ring chains wear longer than standard depending what you're riding through and how well you maintain your machine. I can destroy an O-ring chain just as fast as a standard if I try hard enough. As with any chain, you have to keep them clean and lubed for maximum life. The benefit to the O-ring chain is the o-rings do a better job at keeping the debris out of the roller pins but that doesn't matter if you don't maintain them.

so they're pretty much designed to just wear longer?

You don't need the sticky type chain lube with an o or x ring. Just WD40 works fine and is a hundred times cleaner. With a standard you need a real chainlube for maximum life and that stuff makes a mess.
