I have an 85 350x, that I stripped down to the bare frame and am now putting back together, I tore the carb completely apart and cleaned every possible part .....it starts right up 3rd or 4th kick with the carb choked. It idle's fine (un-choked) once it warms up and revs to half throttle before it starts to cut out...it will completely die past 1/2 throttle...this is all with the trike standing still..its not ready to ride yet.

The plug is pretty black...so from what I've read and the symptoms it seems that its running rich..right?

I'm not sure what size main jet is in there..i'm assuming its the stock 138..my question is what sould I try first...shoud I try raising the clip on the needle ( i think its on the 3rd slot) which should make the run leaner or should I see what size jet is in there and drop it a size or two? Is there ANYTHING else it could be?

Does it sound like I'm on the right track or am I completely off the mark here? Any help would be greatly appreciated...I know that carb and jetting questions are a pain in the butt...but I could use some advise, Thanks

Heres a pic of the 350x :headbang: and my 200x:headbang:

It sounds like the main jet circuit is restricted. The main jet kicks in just before 1/2 throttle. If it were me, I'd pull the carb apart again and check the main jet. Ream it with a small wire to ensure it's clear. Blow compressed air through all the holes you can find. Reassemble, set your pilot screw to 1 3/4. Also, make sure the o ring and washer that go on the pilot jet are in the right order. O ring, washer, spring, pilot jet. Needle in the middle to start with. Give that a whirl and get back to us.

Thanks...just to clarify..The pilot screw is the small one, facing down, behind and to the left of the idle adjustment screw (looking at it from the choke lever side)....It's the only other adjustment on the carb.....snug it down and then back it out 1 3/4 turns....

You are correct.

Also, forgot to mention, make sure the fuel strainer in the fuel tank isn't clogged. Try running it with the petcock in reserve and in normal. See if there's a difference.

the stock setting for an 85' is 138 main and a 40 pilot with the needle clip set in the middle. when i first bought mine the guy before me said it idled rough and ran "a little" rich. took out the carb and he had a 158 m.j. in it. swaped it out and now she's perfect.

when i got mine it would die, unless i put it on reserve, where is the strainer? is it on the petcock?
thanks

yeah its on the petcock inside the tank, do you have enough fuel in it? it has to have close to 2 in. of fuel depth to run off the regular setting and not reserve.
