hello, iam "researching" this conversion. how difficuilt was it to build it? what did you have to cut/modify for it to fit? the mounts look alot alike, did it bolt right in? you need electronics, too didnt you? thank you

well you need to be real handy,,,welder torch and have good skills with both,,,, it took 8 months of fitting and refitting and alot of paitence too ,,,,, but it is done right too ,,,, it is no easy task

harder than a 500r conversion,,, more stuff to get in the way , i guess he has had to cut the frame and all kinds a problems,, just go to 3ww and look him up,,,

thanks for the input, you think this is a good motor for trail riding/open area combonation? my main concern is aligning the sprockets. how would a cr250 work in a 250r frame? justa thought
Mr. Richard

get a atc engine then you won't have any kick start issues and waterhose problems besides it will bolt right in!!!!!

i know about them problems, you have to weld/cut the frame too right. what about the swing amr linkage? done the cr swing amr bolt in the motor? could you PLEASE post some old/recent, pics of it, prefurrbly where you welded? pipe, head(i know theres 2outlites for the coolant) kicker, etc? PLEASE?

i dont't know why, but my edit feture isn't working:confused: kasey, what did you do for the back of the motor? on the CR the pivot bolt goes trhought the swingarm and back of the motor? any pictures would be appreciated, thanks for your replies:thumbsup: :)
Mr. Richard

thje pivot bolt goes thru the back of the motor on the 500,,,,,,, you can't use a 500 pipe cause it won't tuck in the frame right ,,,,,,,,, it has to have a simular shape to the 250r pipe,,,,,,,

so will the motor fit in back there, or does that require cutting and welding?

Okay, am I correct that that trike was actually a cr500 chassis with a trike swingarm/axle? Which is better? a cr500 motor in a 250r chassis or just converting a whole cr500 to a trike?
Mr. Richard

if your an all around rider . the 250r chassis is for you, the suspension is the same ,, but a cr 500 chassis has the suspension geometry all different, thus a drag racer is what its good for,,,,,,,,,,,,

That's what I thought. Thanks Kasey.

mine was a converted cr500. The swingarm was custom made to fit the 500 frame and suspension, the front end is a 3 wheeler setup with a lengthened head bolt/ as the cr steering stem is longer than a 250r is. l also had to section the cr subframe to make the fenders fit properly and look good. sounds like a big deal but not really that big of a deal. I used the cr frame as it was built to handle the vibration of the cr motor while the 250r frame normally holds a counterbalanced motor with a lot less vibration. Hey just my two cents.

I will be gusseting my 250r frame to handle the vibration of the cr motor, as I was warned about it vibrating apart.

my 250r frame is unmolested ,and with over 400 hrs on it, it still has no cracks, if you keep all the motor mounts tight you should have no problems!

What is your riding style?
Mr. Richard

i ride in all conditions , mud , sand, trails ,i have put the 500 to the test, to make sure that it was going to hold up before i started building another one,,,,

Building another one? For yourself to have a better one or you just want another? And do you have any pix of yours?

Kasey, i'm not trying to start anythig i'm just curious. i noticed you did not mention MX type riding do you do any of this or big jumping in dirt? this is what i was refuring to about your frame not holding up.
Basket, i'm not trying to be a jerk about this i'm just going on experiance and only trying to warn of possible frame failures.

BILL,you told me that you would break it in half in one hour . SO no matter how hard i ride it doesn't compare to you.
have you ever been to the dunes ? i don't think its any eaiser on anything just because its sand , what could be any harder on a trike than running 70 mph across the whoops in the sand . just cause i'm not doing 100foot bone crushing jumps dosen't mean the trike isn't getting abused.

Kasey, like i said i'm not trying to start anything i was just curious you see i broke my 250R frame in that same spot (that we've been talking about)when i first got it in 86. sorry if my asking this has offended you i'm not trying to belittle you or your trikes i'm just using my personal experiances. but to answere your question yes i have ridden in sand whoops they are hard on the body but not the frame like say a MX track such as broome-tioga or Unadilla.

Its not that bad of a conversion, its definetly not easy but I've seen and done worse. Mines not done yet (Waiting on Progressive CR500 rear shock and $$$ to buy materials to make my new swingarm and tripple clamps for the inverted CR forks going on the front, and some other stuff). I stretched the frame 3 inches in 2 different places which included putting a peice of round steel tubing inside the original frame tube, and then welding two peices of pipe cut in half to go over the orignal frame tube. They are a tight fit and there was no tolerence inbetween them and the original frame tube. The ends are cut into an upside down A shape for the most area to be welded on as possible. The welds are about an inch and a half away from each side where the orignal frame was cut so that it has some extra re-inforcement. Your frame also has to have a bracket welded onto it for the clutch cable to mount on (The XR's clutch levers on the case pull verticly instead of horizontial like most anything else). Back of the gas tank has to be heightend for the XR carb to clear (If you can recall the top of the 350X carbs are flat, and the XR carb is not). Mounting the airbox and getting it to hook up to the carb is a problem I have not solved yet.
Maybe by the time I'm a 100 years old I'll have it close to done.

Im thinking abouit my own 500 trike project, im not real sure if i should do it yet, but i was gonna take a '76 4 stroke xt500 yamaha dirtbike and turn it into a threewheeler. I haven't decided whether its gonna be worth doing. What are the advantages of the bigger motor and is wieght a big issue on your projects. Im wondering if the xt500 engine will push it around without any trouble, I'd like to see how the xr500 project goes. ive already ruled out putting the motor in a trike frame because the yamaha engine used the oil in the frame. but anyways whatever feedback you can give me would be great.
