I have a 85 250 big red and a really early model atc200 that I got in a lot sale of atcs and parts. They are both complete machines except the wiring, ALL OF IT! is missing on both bikes. before I make plans to break into them, I would like to know if anyone has experience building a complete wiring harness from scratch??

I would think it would be easier to buy a harness than make one. What 200 do you have I might have a harness for it.

I am sure that it would be easier, but I am thinking it would be a great learning experience to make one from scratch. I was thinking it might also be a good skill to have for some upcoming resto-mod 3 Wheeler projects I have in mind.

Do the trikes have the controls and stuff that plug into the harness??
I think a home make harness would be bigger and bulkier than the stock harness.
That said, and being electrically minded, It would not be a big deal to sit down with the OEM wiring diagram and a few spools of wire, a big bucket of connectors and recreate the harness.

The big red has the handlebar controls with the pigtail cut leaving about 3 inches sticking out. The 200 has nothing, and to top that, the wires coming out of the stator and cdi are cut right at the engine.
Last night I did some online research on the way guys are wiring all these custom choppers, from what I am seeing, it looks like if you were to get a late model set of handle bar switches for a quad of the same make as the 3 wheeler you are working on. you could do a pretty sharp harness,
only problem being, as of right now, I know little to nothing about wiring

BW, you really would be better off replacing the components that are cut and going back to the original parts and configuration. You can splice the stator and CDI wires easy enough but building a harness from scratch may be above your skill level at this point.

If you can't really follow and understand a wiring diagram, avoid, stay away, danger - DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN HARNESS!!!!

I build custom harness for ford cars and trucks.it is very time consuming and hard to get the correct conectors, and terminals.it has taken me years to find where to buy parts and proper wire and other parts .You would by way better off buying a junk bike for the wiring ,then parting out the rest.

In short of what everuone has said...
By the time you find ALL the connectors, wire, and everything to put together. You would have way tooooo much $$$$$$ in it. Cheaper to buy used harness bolt in and go.
Wire has gone up.
