View Full Version : Tri-Z questions

So, here's a few I've come up with so far. I've torn the bike apart cleaning and so on, and have a few questions.
1. Exhaust- the pipe feels heavy. Should the expansion chamber on the pipe be light and empty, or is there something dense inside of it (made that way). If it's supposed to be empty, how do I clean it out?
2. What's the best way to clean oil and gunk off the engine?
3. Having never owned a 2-stroke, what's the best mix ratio for the fuel? I bought a quart of Valvoline 2-stroke oil the other day, but haven't mixed it yet.
4. I want to change the crankcase oil, since I've no idea when it was last done. What do I use to refill it, and how much? Actually, I haven't even looked for the drain plug yet...
That's all I can think of for now... Thanks in advance for the help guys.;)

question number 1 not sure about...
Question number 2 i used engine degreaser make sure to read the directions!!!!
question 3 I cannot be accuate i buy a 4 ounce (i think) bottle of Bel Ray RC1 two stroke sinthetic race oil and mix it per bottle to 4 gallons of gas.
Crank case i use bel Ray gear saver oil it has worked great for me.
I don't think i am a pro at this it is just what i use there are many others out there. I use belray everything my buddy races a YZ 125 and has for many years and that is what he uses so that is why i use it in mine.
If any one else uses other stuff or thinks it is better please tell me i am just going off what others say.

question one, the idea of the expansion chamber is to make a negative pressure and suck the exauste out of the engine if iom not mistaken so it may be heavy but it should be hollow.
Question 2. i use ATCO International Or ZEP Big Orange degreaser. i use bot of them straight and have had good luck. good luck finding them though. another good one is Gunk engine degreaser.
Question 3. your best bet is 32:1 wich is four ounces of oil to the gallon of fuel, i would run high test fuel the best you can buy i have good luck with it and if its air cooled dont use outboard motor oil. The oil is made for a liquid cooled motor and it burns too hot in the air cooled motor and fouls plugs. but im not sure if yours is air or liquid.
Question 4. for crankcase oil; i use 80 wt gear oil in my dirtbike. there is a plug on the bottom and you drain it out and as far as i know the amount it takes is printed in the case under the filler plug or it has a dipstick. i dont know how yamaha dose it. you may wanna give some clutch saver oil a try, im gonna use that on my dirtbike when i change it after i rebuild the top end next week.
GOOD LUCK!
Hey triken,
You may wanna check your mix ratios if you ran 4 ounces to 4 gallons youd be running real lean dont you think?

I must have mis typed it i am not sure on the ratio but i think it is around 32:1 when i do it with a bottle of the RC1 to 4 gallons of gas.... I will have to look when i do it next time... But it runs and burns good.

I run 28:1 in my POS. For the crankcase I used 30wt, but I've heard all kinds of opinions on what to use in the crankcase.
I have a couple of extra pipes and they are both kinda heavy. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

A guy at the local independent shop today told me that I can have a radiator shop boil the pipe to get all the crud out. I'm going to look into that and find out how much it costs. He also said something about torching it out. Don't think I'll try that.

that will work, if your a piro like me,:demon: you could just pour some gas in the pipe and light er up! it will burn all the extra oil and crud out of the pipe.

Have you tried that before? I'm curious because someone else suggested it to me today...

Hope these help:
1: Most factory pipes have a steel mesh welded inside them to supress noise. All it does is get full of old unburned oil and carbon. I've cut open Honda pipes, and they are the same way. Get an aftermarket pipe and be happy. And don't forget to replace that HUGE silencer.
2: Take the engine to the car wash and hose it down with engine degreaser. If it's green, it's good. Let it sit, then blast it with high pressure soap, then rinse. Make sure to plug every opening before you do, otherwise water will get into the bottom end.
3: 32:1 is a good, safe ratio. Don't change it until you find out what jets are in the carb. Run a good, high quality premix oil from day one, like Maxima Super M, Premium 2, or Formula K2 Synthetic. Your main bearings and rings will thank you.
4: The crankcase oil volume will be cast in the cases near the filler hole. It should be somewhere in the 1000cc range. As for the kind of oil to use, there are many good choices, but DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL. Motor oil has many additives that are harmful to small engines. I personally use Maxima Racing Oils exclusively. Not to bash other oils, but I have access to Factory Suzuki test data, and nothing comes close to Maxima. Go to their website for info about what oil to use. A good start is Maxima MTL-E 85W. The drain plug is on the bottom of the cases.
Good luck with your Tri-Z.

I just called the closest radiator shop, and asked if he'd do a motorcycle pipe. He said sure. So then I asked how long it would take and how much, and he said he wouldn't charge anything. I dropped it off and that was it. Voila!
I was as shocked as you are- I pick it up tomorrow (after I get home from RIDING!!!!)
