Well, like an idiot I didn't keep my kids' ATC70 fueled up during storage this summer. Since I live in Arizona, I really didn't think there was much chance of the tank rusting. I pulled the cap off the other day- the tank is dry and there's rust all over in there. It wasn't there last spring!
So, now what do I do? I purposely haven't started the bike. I filled it with gas and am letting it sit. Should I try muriatic acid, put a fuel filter on it and then run it??? Or should I go straight to the Kreme treatment or whatever that crap is???
HELLLLLPPPPP!

You could put some gravel in there and shake thoroughly. :D

I'm guessing that is just sort of surface rust because it was only one summer. I think the gravel idea would be good more for if there is large flakes of rust, I'd try the acid and see if that does anything, rinse it out with gas after you drain the acid a few times and then give it a try. When you say put a filter in it, does that mean it currently doesn't have one or your just going to replace it?

Isnt acid coarosive(SP?) ....I am following this too. I have 2 tanks that need to be done....one real bad....one real lightly rusted. Also since the 70 is such a small tank how do you make sure all chemical are out.....and if you cant will those chemicals hurt your engine?? Thx Jen

I was planning on just putting one of those inline fuel filters on the fuel line(s). The 70 actually has two fuel lines- the extra is for reserve, I believe. But, I'm also contemplating a Mikuni carb for the bike, which would require a fuel petcock change (the stock petcock is part of the stock carburetor). Soooo, haven't decided yet. As far as the acid goes, I'd heard of that some time ago, and like hrc said, as long as you repeatedly flush the tank with some fuel, and let it air out good, there's not much chance of leaving anything in there that will harm the motor.

I was gonna try to fill the tank up with ZEP industrial strength rust remover. (household cleaning products) I have used it before cleaning my brakes and any other nuts and bolts that had rust. I just let things soak awhile and whammo rust gone. But all items I had tried it on, I could get too externally somehow...via rag or whatever to make sure all chemicals were wiped or gone. I think I will try it and see.

Do atc 70's have a filter in the tank? If they do, it would also be good to remove it when putting the acid in. The stock filters are very fine, and most inline filters I've seen are more coarse then a stock filter.
