View Full Version : Where to get a 185s cylinder and a couple other questions...

I'm rebuilding the top end in my 1981 185s cause the timing chain tensioner broke... I have a few questions:

1. Where do you suggest I get a cylinder..mine is cracked.
2. How much should I pay for one?...whats the going price.
3. Do 185s pistons have a small relief on the exhaust side and a larger one on the intake side or did my valves do a tap dance on the piston?
4. The headgasket that I took off of it has what appears to be a gasket sandwiched between two thin metal shim/gaskets, the 3 can be separated. Is this stock?

get a cylinder off ebay (200s) 20 bucks???? valves hit the piston. your gasket seperated. the 200 cyls are more common and the same thing. you may be better off to get a whole motor off ebay. most of the time a 200s goes for under 50 bucks

Um, not trying to look stupid here but isnt a 185s cylinder a smaller bore than a 200s? If I use a 200 cylinder wont I need a 200 piston?

Theres a XL185 piston and cylinder on Ebay, would that work?

are you thinking of just getting a 185 cylinder and putting your old piston in that? if our cylinder bad so i your piston. it may not look bad but mic it i is. most of the time these are sold in sets on ebay. to get use cyl youll have to know if your pston is std 10/ 20 / 30 / 40 over. then find a cyl to match. then hope its not wore down to the limit, the same with your piston

I'm planning on replacing the piston. So, do you know if a XL185 cylinder will fit?

if you're replacing the piston anyway why not go with the 200 cylinder for a little more power?

if you go with a 185s i have a cylinder and piston. i would put some new rings on it but it was on a running engine. $25 plus shipping.

I'm gonna get mine checked out by the shop next week. I may be mistaking scoring for a crack. If I need another I'll let you know.
