Flying,,,, numbered drawers???

FlyingW
03-10-2008, 01:07 PM
Jenn,

When working on aircraft, the technicians and mechanics toolboxes are very specific in that each drawer has the tools have a foam cutout to make it easy to see when a tool is missing and the toolbox has a complete inventory by drawer. Lost tools on aircraft can cause an airplane to crash. This is one of the boxes I was working from when I worked for Raytheon Aerospace. And, I'm anal.......

Too strange (in a work sorta way) to see tool control mentioned here.

There was a big flap at the flight line yesterday. Flashlights are now classified as tools, and have to be controlled. They are numbered now and you have to sign them out.

That's not unusual nutter. In the Air Force, flashlights, rags, buckets etc are all controlled. I can't tell you how many times we shut down the flightline to find a phillips bit that was missing from a toolbox.

I live 10 min from Tinker AFB in the South East part of the city. IF you want to come down one weekend maybe we can get Ride-Red to join us. He's just North of the city on this side of the Kansas state line. We have some places around to ride.

Blood Clot or Tonka Trike..... I like both of them. I do have 2 more 70's to do so maybe I'll do both..

FlyingW

I decided on doing Tonka Trike on this one. Only cause I have a cabinet of partially used cans of paint. I had a yellow that worked well enough. It's Krylon old farm equipment yellow. The frame is cast iron grey. I'll go Monday and order the decals for the tank. It's going to be stock for the most part. I wanted it to look kinda toyish utility kinda look. Of all four 70's I've picked up, I got 6 serviceable tires so I'm pleased about that. I actually used the 50 ton press at work tonight to dismount all the tires. I had 2 1" steel rings that were slightly larger than the hubs. I put a round disk of 1" aluminium on top of the rings and hit the lever. Actually worked pretty good. I selected 3 good sets of inners and outers to bead blast and paint. I'll get the tires mounted back up tomorrow and put back on the trike. Next weekend is the motor. I went against my better judgement and painted the red plastic tank I had. It was all faded and whiteish anyway so I had nothing to loose. It should hold up ok if I can keep gas off of it. I'll paint the fenders as well the same way I did the tank. After wet sanding the tank, I applied a couple of coats of Bulldog, primed and painted. It didn't turn out too bad. It's a beater for sure. I'll post more later.

Make sure you have good O-rings when you put the wheels back together, or they will leak.

FlyingW
03-16-2008, 08:33 PM
I'm doing that right now. I got nice smooth rim beads and serviceable orings. I have this stuff called petulatum. It's kinda like vaseline but it's for oring assembly. I use this stuff on airplanes. So far, so good.

ATCnut
03-16-2008, 10:26 PM
i have used vaseline on two piece rim O-rings, it works too.

FlyingW
03-16-2008, 10:29 PM
Fat, Skinny, thick, or thin, vaseline will get it in......

FlyingW
03-16-2008, 10:36 PM
Rims went together beautifully, no leaks. I also put that petulatum around the beads. If I ever have to split the rims, the tire slide right off.

Flying W. I have figured out how you can work so hard. I was in Norman OK yesterday and it was beautiful. It hasn's been that nice in Kansas. I will get started on one of the four sometime soon. But you are doing excellent work.

FlyingW
03-24-2008, 03:33 PM
I have a 3 car garage, kerosene heater, and satallite TV. On the weekends I usually can be found puddering around with my trikes late at night after my wife goes to bed. I do my best work late at night when everything is quiet. That's how I do it. That's my battery charging time.

Norman, what were you doing there? Ya didn't call, ya didn't email. Becker was at my place yesterday. we were trying to figure out the electrical problem with his SX.

Yesterday was a bit nippy for me so if you think it was beautiful then the weather in Kansas must be really sucky lately.

djlaw1995

I have to meet the ex-wife there for the kid exchange. Sorry I didn't call or email. It was a quick trip. That is why I said I would be more than happy to let you look at my suspended 70. And like you I have to wait till my son goes to sleep then I sneak out to the ONE car garage move everyhing outside then start the wood stove to work.

FlyingW
03-30-2008, 01:42 AM
Say hello to "Tonka Trike". I finished up the assembly tonight. Tomorrow I'll see if I did everything right. Hopefully it will fire right up. The fender and tank didn't turn out too bad. I usually don't paint plastic but since I couldn't get the stuff I need in the right color, I didn't have a choice. It should look good for a little while. I fashioned Tonka Trike from an 85 I bought for 100.00. I sank 300.00 in to it for misc parts. The motor was in great shape so I didn't see the point in to dumping a bunch of money in to rebuilding it. Unlike Spontanious Combustion $$$$$$$$$$$$. I have one more 70 to build later this summer. I think it's going to be "Hot Wheels". To be continued......

I fired it up and she runs like sheet. Idles beautifully but 1/2 to full throttle is horrible. I think it time for a brand new carb.. I put a rebuild kit in it but I tend to think the carb is just flat worn out.

X053,

What I did was buy one of those "save a carb" kits from DRATV. Today after posting my problem I pulled the carb and started comparing the old and new parts.I realized the needle that came with the kit was shorter and more blunt. I took one of the old needles and installed it along with an OEM slide. Now it runs pretty good but now I can't get the idle adj screw to set the idle. It's like the adj screw is too short. It worked fine with the DRATV slide but not OEM. Next i took an OEM adj screw and put it in with the same results. I'm stumped on this one. At this point I'm considering spending the cash and buying a new OEM carb from DRATV but before I scrap this carb, I would like to look in to the idle issue a little more. Any thoughts? These little 70 carbs are very fickle to say the least.

Looks sweet! I just acquired my old ATC 70 that I grew up on this weekend:thumbsup: . My parents sold it to a family friend when I outgrew it, but after years of loving trikes, I found out who had it and got it back! and boy is she a sweetie!!! and in the deal I got a 1983 FL250 odyssey, a 1977 ATC90, and a 1983 Honda 250 Rebel (haha). Does anybody talk up/about the odyssey's on the boards anywhere??

For you 70 trike heads, just a little update on Tonka Trike. I knew when I painted the plastic red tank that it would last. The paint started bubbling almost immedietly. The tank was old and had sat outside with gas in it for a long time so the tank plastic was thoroughly saturated with gas.

Friday, I got my hands on a tank in real good condition for 50 bucks. It did have a little rust inside and only a couple of tiny dents. I found 3 pin hole leaks and fixed those. I also bought some Evapo-rust and soaked the inside of the tank over night. Let me tell you, for rusty tanks, Evapo-rust is the sh!t. I didn't believe it would work but OH YA!!!!!!!! it was beautiful. I cleaned the tank and added some paint to finish it.

The problem I found with Tonka Trike was tuning it after putting on a CRF50 exhaust system. It would run like a swiss watch up to half throttle but half to WFO is ran poorly. This is with the new carb. I stepped from the stock #58 main jet all the way up to a #80 but it would never run right so tonight I put it back to stock configuration by puttling the stock exhaust pipe and airbox back on as well as putting the #58 jet back in and the needle back in the middle. It started up and seems to run pretty good. I'll run it hard tomorrow.

How many of you have stock airboxes with the intake boot is gone? I had 3 of them. I cut and shaped a piece of radiator hose and used a good 2 part epoxy to glue it to the hole on the air cleaner. It worked like a champ.

Tyese things are very fickle when it come to tuning. What works for you may not work for me. Each trike is different.
