Well first off I gotta say that I luv this site!!! Without it I probley would not be doing my build!

I have a 1985 ATC 250R That I have already stripped down to a roller, and a running 1987 CR500 engine. I have read everything on here about doing a 500R but I still need a little help. I have cut and grinded away the bottom motor mounts and it still seems to be pretty far off from just fabbin up some mounts. Can anybody post pics or details on the frame fab? Any help with any details on this build would be GREAT!!! I know its alot of work, but I want to be done with the fab and mods in the next mounth so I can send everything out to be polished, chromed, or refinished and have it ready for summer. I also just bought a new camera so I will start a new Thread with pics and details on my 500R build and pics of my other trikes very soon.

You need to talk to kasey and 200x_basket. I know there are others, but those are the only two I know of offhand who have ATC500Rs. Of course, Kasey is very secretive about his special frame process so you may have to pay a commission for info on his buildup. ;) :duck: :lala: :D

I talked to a guy that Im going to have do all my frame fab work to install the motor to the frame. Im still trying to figure out if I will be able to use the lights, and i fso how to use the 250R stock switch. And Im also trying to figure out the coolent hoses, the 250R and CR500 are a little different. I will start a new detailed thread with pics about my 500R build within a week. I just would like a little help on how to workout all the details. Thanx again fellow trikers!:headbang:

I did a KXT500 build. Put a KX500 into a KXT250. Just used the bottom frame from the KX into the KXT. Was a simple build. Havent done a 500r yet though.

on my 500 i blocked off one of the top ports on the 500 head,, used one of the 250r hoses backwards from the way it was,, to go from the head to the top of the left radiator,,, the rest is all stock 250r,,, i haven't had any cooling issues till i got to the desert southwest ,, then i had to run better coolant and pay attention to the temp in the summer months,,, when its above 95 it needs more radiator for sure,,, but thats with stock radiators too,,, and then its just to hot to ride anyway,,,,,,,

no you cant use the lights unless you buy a special lighting coil.

my build post shows 90% of what i did to fit the 500 in there. this is jsut one of those projects that you have to tackel head on. be sure to get the front sprocket, pivot bolt, and rear sprocket in line when the chassis is loaded.

Where can I find the special lighting coil? I have my fab work almost done, Im still waiting on parts to come in that are being finished. I will post some pics very soon! I can wait to share it with the fellow trikers on this site and get some feedback. Thanx again!

One more question? What is the difference between the 85-88 and 89-01 CR500 head? I really want to run a cool head, but its only offered for the 89-01 motors and mine is a 87. Im not sure but I think the only difference is the frame mount on them for the different frames, but I cant spend the $250. to find out It will not bolt on my motor. If its only the frame mount thats different, I need to get it soon to finish my fab work. Any help with this would be graet! Thanx again!

i built mine with the super easy button, i just used a 87 cr500 frame and grafted the original swing arm to a trx450r swing arm. it gave me 2006 brakes and a nice strong axle, hubs, bearing carrier and sprocket all for the price of $200 off of e-bay. then i used 250r tripples with the cr500 neck bolt. it's extremley long and raked out for drag racing, but i'm pretty suree my entire build was less than what it will cost to make a correct flowing 500r pipe... just my 2cents.

back to the head question, i'm not realy a cr500 guru, but the guys at
www.cr500riders.com are. they will be able to answer any 500 motor questions you may have. i know that 85 through 88 are pretty much identical with 87/88 having a removable clutch acess cover. 85-86 were the higher horsepower motors with a little more compression and higher and bigger ports in the cylinder. they detuned the later years a little bit.

if i can be of any help, dont hesitate to ask...

Thanx for the info! Seems like I cant get enough. So far I have a Guy named Kerry Mclean doing my fab work, He is famous for his 1 wheel cycles! Check him out @ KerryMclean.com. He is pretty good at fabbing anything! So far Im using a 1985 ATC 250R frame, 1986-? +9 TRX 250R swingarm fabed to work in my app., and a 1987 CR500 engine with a 2000 CR250 kicker. Its coming along great! I really want the lights to work so thats what Im checking into while Im waiting on parts. Im also trying to figure out if I can run the Cool-head on the 87 motor, Its only offered for the 89-01 CR500 motors. I cant wait to get a little closer to being done! When I get my frame back I will start posting pics. For now the only part of my build that Im unsure of is my pipe? Any ideas or hints would be great, I want a nice shinny inframe pipe. Thanx again fellow trickers!

Dont waste your time with Ricky Stator. The only " special lighting coil " they can add to your existing stator plate is a 25 watt coil. This is barley enough to operate a small tail light. If you want to run a factory headlight assy. you'll have to go to plan B. As far as cylinder heads go Honda made several different 500 heads. The difference is in the design of the combustion. As far as coolheads go there cool. They look good, but the biggest advantage to a coolhead is its changeable domes. Unless you are planning on changing your cylinder head regularly or you have a specific dome spec'd out the power gain you will achieve is negligable. With 500's its not about making more power its about managing whats there. Plus, when dabbling with compression on 500's consider starting it. Have you ever started a CR 500? A valuable source of ATC 500 information is the moderator known as Kasey, also I was told there are several members with 500's. Collectivley a good source of information. Go for it! P.S. We always use the easy button on all of our builds it works great.
