View Full Version : 250R reeds choice
For all of the 250R trikers here, what is your preference for reeds? I'm looking at getting the Vforce3 setup for my 85 250R, but I want other's opinions as to what they like to use.
Thanks.

I have the same. I have heard as far as aftermarket cages though that the best is a modified (rough ported) Cr 250 with a good reed set like boyesen or a pyramid.
I'm running a CR cage with Aktive reeds on mine. I believe they come stock(or at least did) on most KTM's. It seems to work pretty well with the 38 PWK and ESR pipe.

You cant go wrong with any. If one works better then the other, its very slight. Check for pricing and base your decision on that. Sometimes you can find deals..

I have never used a cr cage.
From the others heres my experience. V force cages do very well with pv engines. They get good bottom but fall flat fast around 8,000
Rad valves isnt as strong down low as the v force, but up top carries much better than any other cage.
Pyarmid. Smooth all around, not going to beat eather of the other 2 at any point but give you a nice broad powerband. Will still do good with a torque engine or high rev.
Stock realy isnt that bad but you will notice a diffrence when switching.

While on the subject of reeds what reeds will fit the 81-84 250r? i have done some re search online and the only place that says anything about reeds for the 84 250r is on denniskirk.com they say the boyseen pro44 reeds will fit but they are the only ones that say they will fit so this doesnt make me feel too comfortable about buying them. if anybody knows which ones will fit please let me know also if anybody knows what reed cages work on the 84 engine that would be helpful too.

Duner II how do you like your Puma cylinder? Are they able to be purchased by the main public yet?
VForce outperforms them all, but stock is really good unless you a searching for every last hp from you bike.
Jcorkin, all the reeds for the 81-89 250R are the same and will work except for the boyseen rad valve because it is angled (wont work on the 81-84).

so any reed cage(81-89 250r) will work for my 84 and as long as i dont go with boyseen rad valve i can use any year reeds as well? if thats right that is awesome i knew i signed up on these forums for a reason!

1985-89 ATC-TRX Work's VERY GOOD with the "88" CR Reed Cage along with Boyesen Reed's .... Part #14100-KS7-831... Small Intake Gasket #14132-KAE-000
Lot's of people like the "97" CR Cage ... it's kinda like the V-Force Thing ..
TOO MUCH Bottom... Good Luck

Its still being assembled. I do believe they can be purchased but it takes a while to recieve it. It should be done in 2 wks, so I will let you know. I am going to do an override as well, which should be ready for the Rampage.

Lol. Might as well pull them..here ya go... after Pete gets it tuned on gas, gonna toss a 48mm carb and run alky. Pete is designing an outta frame drag pipe as well. Gonna chase the 100 rwhp on 3 wheelers Jay! Gonna beat on Pete's Polanda at the Rampage. It hurts him to build it, cause I think he knows the outcome...:D
btw, got me another bike to dune. TRX 250R with a CT 350 with an inframe and on gas. Mid 50's hp right now, but when Pete's done with the Puma, I'm gonna give him the 350 for some massaging.

Sounds bitchen, look forward to seeing all the trikes at Rampage. I'm almost as excited as you are I think about your ride. Nice to see some fast trikes around these parts again. Its funny, you go to the sand, whip all the 4 pokes, most 350 banshees, then work on some 4 mill's, then there is this huge gap to 10 mill's. So basically you rarely get to even see another R let alone race one.

Does the '88 cage have the plastic stuffer or is it part of the boot?

Now you guys are talking my language!!!!!! Unfortunatly most of the 2-stroke I deal with are Banshee's. We (CPI) build cool heads, Bib bore cool heads, alll pipes, and custom motors. We have a stock cylinder, resleeved, big bore motor running a 10mm crank hitting 100 on gas RELIABLY. How many horse will the puma's do all done up? Are the capapble of 100+? Anymore you have to LOOK out for some of these "sleeper" Banshee's But........it is still my favorite to beat these guys at there own game!
And I LOVED my Rad Valve. AWESOME!

Probably wont see one reach 100 hp on gas, but on alky and a drag pipe, 100+ is very possible.

This is the Motor that ALL of our Banshee pipes are based off. It runs IN FRAME Big Bore pipes, Different sleeves, reeds, pistons (not just bigger banshee pistons) and our custom big bore cool head, 10mm crank, 38's bored to 41.5's and 112 octane race gas will do 100-104 hp depending on barametric pressure and temperature. With Alky and drags we can hit 120! This is our SPECIALTY MOTOR!
