Tec-3 ?'s

hey all, im new here, but would like an opinion...im going to look at a '86 tec-3 on sat. Im a honda guy, never owned a kawalski.. this is what i know from a phone converstion..its an 86 stock(as far as he knows) its all there, has red plastic, and has a carb problem(he says needs a carb rebuild), doesnt run...i know the "normal" stuff to look for , im bringing a comp. gauge and know what to look for buying a used atv.. (bearings/bushings, inside airbox) But i guess i dont know if its a 5 or 6 speed, what stock "good compression" should be, any lil wierd cracks, or "things" i should avoid...im not having to mortgage the farm for this ride, but also dont wanna throw away 5 hun on a total pos... thanx:lala: hehe

Duerash if it is red its probrably an 85, as far as I know that is the only year you had a choice of colors, I think I would hold out for an 86 or 87 if I were you, but I'm not so you do whatever you like!:chuckle:

i think ive heard that one before... but thanks on the color thing...he says he has a title..so i should be able to figure out what yr it is...but ive never seen a red one before...was thinking it wasnt stock plastic?

If it's red, it's an '85. It may be an '86 that's been painted, but don't count on it. Doesn't run, huh? It's probably more than a carb problem. Tecates are very notorious for having the stator go out on them. He's probably telling you it's the carb because he doesn't want to scare you off. Stators, new or used, are not cheap. $500? I wouldn't pay that for an '85. But, it's up to you, so check it out and talk him down if you want to. If he won't budge, give him a big F U! :2finger: Good luck.

bmfzilla: any way to check the stator, besides seeing if it has spark?...pull the cover off for a visual?...BTW we have a dodge too(Id rather be cummin than strokin)..

I've never had luck with visual inspections. Most stators are filthy from years of improper care, and the coils are under the flywheel anyway. The best bet is to check and see if there is spark. No spark, 90% chance the stator is bad. BTW, good choice on your truck! I'm going to the Army, and as soon as I'm done with BCT, I'm plunkin' down some greenbacks on a new HEMI Quad Cab Ram.

Dan: it doesnt run:( after talking with the guy for just a few minutes on the phone i could tell he is a non-rider and
had know idea about why it didnt run(said carb needed rebuild) or anything else about the bike for that matter, so ill go take a look...BTW on a Tec-3, can u pull the main jet outa the bottem of the carb... without taking the carb off? And does the Tec-3 run a B8es spark plug?

just to let you guys know. Ricky Stator now sells tecate stator and stator coils. he gets $120 for a new stator. $45 for ignition coils and 55 for lighting coils. my stator blew and I was looking into getting a pvl, but I got a good stator with a motor I bought. also, 84's were red, 85,86,87 were green.

Chainsaw: I'm sorry to say, but my bank account went south for the winter, and I have nothing right now. The last trike I had was an '85 ATC250R that ended up in somewhere Texas. My last ride was my second LT500R, but it went to Wichita. It sucks being poor. When I get through with BCT I'm gonna start looking for another '86 or '87 Tecate 3 for a project. If you make it back down here, stop in at Little Sahara ATV on 281 S., just north of Jim's Sand Toys. I'm usually at LSATV. If I'm there, you can't miss me. I'm 6' 5" and 225, hence my nickname BMF (Big Mother Fill in the rest). :D

Shouldn't the headlights flicker when kicking it if the stator is making power?

Ya It has Nebraska Tags, the tri-z was sitting on a red trailer by a tepee tent! I was going to see if I could find ya but never got around to it, oh well maybe next time.

You going down for snake hunt? I would be down sooner than that but I'm trying to get an enclosed trailer bought!
