Anyone ever cleaned up a rusty front brake caliper? The piston is hanging up and not retracting. I've soaked it some (not by submerging, just spraying) some de-rust junk on it, and I'm contemplating removing it and taking some krokus (sp?) cloth or something to it and reassembling it.

Any suggestions??? It hasn't been leaking or anything, just binding.

Drop the piston into a cup of Zep rust remover.....let it sit for a bit. You get the stuff at home improvement store....the actual name is Zep calcium, rust and lime stain remover. (for your toilets) It is non coarosive. I used this to take the rust off my 200x rear brakes. I used it everywhere had no trouble.

ANY kind of oil will make the rubbers swell. They’re made just for brake fluid.
So be care full what you put on them.

my dads old motorcycle did the same thing he just worked them in and out with some channle locks you hold the locks on the calipiper and slowly and carefully move the handle then when its almost all the way out push the piston back in with the channle locks and keep at it it takes awhile

I know its a cleaner. Just putting out a warning so no one thinks,” well I will just oil the rubbers when I put it together.” :nono: Lube with brake fluid.

Some people may not know. ;)

i had two rear break sets with the same rust problem. took them apart and use 600 grit wet or dry. new seals. one piston had been locked side ways and wore the fiber pad off at about 20%. milled that flat. it has no pad now, it works fine. new piston $ 80.00. honda sure likes there brake parts

When i redo calipers. I take the piston out and wire wheel it. Then i use emery cloth to polish it. As long at the piston dosnt have any pits in it. It will be fine. . It is also a good idea to emery cloth the inside of the caliper to make sure any rust or junk is removed from it. Then just put new rubbers in it oil everything up. I use automotive caliper assemble oil(available at most auto stores) And put it back together. It will work like it just came out of the factory. And no more sticking.
