I just picked up a 1982 hond 185s.It has been a lot of fun so far.I would like to know what needs to be done to ride in mud and water. Can this be done with out damage to the enging? How deep can the water be before I need a snorkel?I dont plan on going deeper then the foot pegs.Just playing in mud puddles. Also to clean up after a dirty ride should I let the motor cool first?

Thanks

Welcome to the site. Riding in mud and water is tons of fun, honda designed these to be fairly water resistant, but you want to make sure that the airbox doesn't have any holes on it, and that the airhoses are on tight etc. If there are any problematic areas rtv or silicone can help, it's a good idea to change the engine oil after a ride filled with lots of water, and to take off the stator cover and make sure no water is trapped in there, and of course to wash things up and then lube things like the chain etc. I would let the motor cool a bit before i blasted it with cold water, I haven't ever heard of anyone hurting a motor by doing this, but better safe than sorry.
