If it's shaft drive then it could be a bearing or drive shaft. Just like the 250SX, water is not your friend with 23 year old seals and journals that let water enter. I suggest tearing it down with the service manual in hand and more than likely you'll find the problem but even if you don't, you'll have piece of mind that everything is tight and it's all been greased.
Yes it stinks, yes you just want to ride it, but you better fix it before you lose a part that is difficult to find even used.....

well tell me this... i talked to a guy tonight and he asid that water shouldnt hurt it. He also said that if my starter went bad, something might have went bake there ang did some damage. He said chances are it didnt, but he said that there is always a posibility. So anyhow, do you think me riding it with a bad starter like that did anything???

Water + gears, bearings = disaster!
I dont care what ANYone says about that! Thats the way it is!
Your starter will have NOTHING to do with your trike making noises in 5th gear while you are riding it!
Where is the noise coming from? I'll bet it is tranny or driveline problems!

I would disagree on the starter hurting a Tranny,...
Picture this for a moment,, EVERYTHING constant moves.. So your starter went bad, (pieces broke) ITS moving and while your riding gear it jams something long enough to do some damage to the tranny under force.. Make sense?,,, Like the guy said not likely BUT could happen..
So yeah I would say its possible...
The question is what exactly went bad in the starter I guess I would ask?
Either way 5th gear howl,, needs attention, whatever caused it.

people told me that water shouldnt hurt it. Although there is a hole that goes throught the axle part of the rear end. It had threads on it and is located right above the grease fittin. Should there be something there to stop water??? What if dirt got in there. Would that hurt fifth gear??? I know a couple of kids 225dx's and they just have bolts in there.

It's probably a bad bearing. Possibly a bad pinion gear. You may not notice it UNTIL you are in 5th gear because of the increased RPM of the axle. If it's making noises from the rear end, it's not in the 1-5 gearing as that's forward up in your motors bottom end behind the crank.
To test for severe axle bearing wear, stand upright on your footpegs and tilt the trike left and right and see if you see play in the rear axle/housing. If there's play in the axle, order new seals and bearings from Dad's here on the board.
If there's no play in the axle, then you'll have to dive into the rear differential. There is a bearing in the front of that with say 8 large ball bearings and a race holding them that I've seen go bad before too.
Do you have a good parts/service manual for your DR??

Where in PA are you?? I'm in the Southern Tier of NY. If you brought it up, I'm sure Raffa or myself could figure it out for you and that I'd have the parts around to get it fixed.
My zip is 14437 if you want to do a quick Mapquest on it.
