i just put a new piston and rigs and valves in the engin and new gasketseverywhere except for the middle of the case.it runs strong but when i shut it of it has smoke coming out of the exhuast pipe. i put the rings on at 10,2 and 6 o clock so i dont think that oil is coming into the cylibnnder from the case but i am not sure. any ideas are appreciated thanks

is your silencer packing oil saturated from the old engine? now that its running a little hotter cause its new maybe its burning out all the old oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,how much time on the new engine?

it has a brand new exhaust . i forgot to mention that. it is an 85 250 es big red. it has aproximatly 45 minutes on it.i realy havent got to take it out and really break it in yet cause i live in the city and the nieghbors wont let me start the bike cause they will call the cops.
i said screw um though that is why it has 456 minutes on it. i let idle.till the cops got here anyways.

if im not mistaken it takes awhile for the rings to set. i know my 110 needs new rings because the never set right and now it smokes like a chiminy when cold, then it warms up and its not so bad, but it dosent seem to ever need oil. go figure!

how do u let the rings seat

A good way to get the rings to seat is to ride it and hold it wide open for a few seconds and then let off all the way. And that helps to get the rings wiggled into the groove on the piston. By forcing it down under heavy exceleration. And then lifting them up under heavy deexceleration. Help to wiggle the rings deeply into the groove so the wont move anymore.

Sounds like maybe valve seals are bad and allowing oil to seep into the cylinder when the engine is not running. And when you start the engine it smokes until it burns the excess oil out of the cylinder. Usally with bad rings it is going to smoke like a dickens all the time.

rings seating what fuzzy said. but doing it 3rd or 4th gear. do it 4/5 times in a row. dont let it set here and idle, this well cause a glaze on the cylinder wall. you,ll never get them to seat. this is on a 4 cycle only

well i actually rode the 110 in the light yesterday and it dose smoke the hole time. just not as bad when its warm. but still looks like im fogging for mosquitos.

Good point technogeek. Is the smoke black or blue?. It could still be rings. So when it gets hot the piston and rings exspand and not leak as much. Have you done a compression test on it?.

the smoke used to be black byt seince i put the 110 jets in the carb and not the 125 jets the smake has turned to pure blue. defedently oil. and the plug shows just sighns of oil burning not too much gas.

Hummm you are going to have to do a compression test on it to tell if it is the rings. Or in the head. And it dosnt take a whole lot of oil to smoke. Just a couple of drops will make it smoke like the dickens. That is probable why you dont notive the oil going down. But it could also be the dowels that go between the head and cylinder to move oil to the head. Arnt sealing and allowing oil in to the cylinder and causing the smoking. So a compression test would really help to narrow it down.

what should i be getting for compression. i can tell you it dosent have alot its real easy to pull over.

It should read between 150-200 psi.

And the 110`s ran 8.2-1 compression so it should pull over fairly hard. It sure sounds like you might be loosing compression. Let me know what you find out.

i know what that much compression feels like and i defidently dont have over 100 and my compression tester dosent have the 10 0r 12 mm adapter the smallest i have is 14mm so ill have to pick one up.
