ok, did they have a 84 model? internally is there any differance between the model years?

Nope, just '85 and '86 models. The tag on the frame will say like 1985 and the actuall date next to it might say 8/84, but just go by what the big number says.
Only things that I know of that are different are the cam chain adjuster and the clutch pertch that goes into the motor. I don't know if they are interchangable but I'm guessing they would be. That is just in the motor, there are a number of other differences on the rest of the machines from 85 to '86. Oh, I forgot one, I think the oil drain plugs are different too.

aren't the swingarms different as well?

Yes, he asked internally though, so I assumed that he was just wondering about the engine. the rims are different, rear caliper brackets, one stud on the swing arm that has to do with the brakes, bearing carriers, somthing in the steering, top clamp on a '86 is black, seat, front calipers, clutch cable routing, dial on the rear shock resivour, and some more things I can't remember.

The '86 lower bearing, lower bearing inner race, and lower bearing outer race on the steering are different than the '85.
