View Full Version : Atc 70 still runs lean in mid throttle after adjusting the needle

I have a bog at mid throttle with my atc 70. I am running a stock ’85 motor and carb. that has a new piston and rings. I have the timing set (new points and condenser). For a while it would only run on choke so I pulled the carb. and let it soak over night then ran it through an ultrasonic cleaner… it’s clean. Now with the needle clip all the way down (needle up) I can get it to run off choke but there is still a little bog in the mid throttle, raising the clip (lowering the needle) makes it worse. I checked for air leaks by spraying carb. cleaner around but didn’t find any, what do I do next?
Also, are the needles different between years? I may have a ’84 needle, it says J2302G on it (I think, it’s small print).

Hey Fox, just for giggles take the ends off the air cleaner and pull the foam filter out and see how she runs like that.

Well that makes it run worse....

I have taken a needle chucked it in the cordless drill and changed the taper to make a 70 run better,,, if it needs more fuel in the middle there is not much else you can do, i don't know if you can get different needles or not i have not bothered ,, most of the parts guys can't even find 70 parts let alone know what your looking for,, ... if you have good fuel flow and the float level is ok make sure the plug looks good maybe try a larger main jet too,,,

I just thought I would give an update.
I bought the carb. needle jet set (http://www.dratv.com/atpactsl21.html) from DRATV.com and it fixed the problem. The new needle and holder look a little bigger then the stock one but they work well.
