I was looking at getting my 82 300r on the dyno at Top Dog racing here in Damascus, OR. The owner Sean told me I needed a larger carb and performance pipe for my trike. Well I have a 39mm Airstriker on its way, but I have only seen one aftermarket pipe for my 82. It is a DG. Is this a good pipe?? Are there other mfg that make a pipe for my trike?? Is the stock pipe that bad??

A 39mm should be enough for ya. I don't think you have a big selection for that '82 unless you have a custom pipe made.

That was what I was thinking. Have any experience with DG pipes?? That looks like the way I'm going.

I don't have any on any of my trikes, but based on what I've heard (for what that's worth) they are hit and miss. On some trikes they help alot and on some they dont make any difference. Haven't heard anything either way about an '82.

Thanks for the info. What size carb are you running on your 300r??

I've still got a new Mugen pipe or two left that would really make the 300 breath. You would need to use the DG silencer with it.

did you say you can mount them on the 83-84? didn't it need an adapter on the exhaust port or something?
How much.

No... They will only work on the '81 - '82 R. And yes they have the 250R/300R exhaust bushing in them, ready to go. I've only got 2 new ones left, $180 plus shipping.

If you are going all out, get something besides the DG. From what I've heard, the DG is basically just a stock replacement in terms of performance. That Mugan is probably your best bet since it's new and Mugen use to make their own big bore kits for the 81-82R.
You might be able to find an old sectional cone pipe on ebay, (IBills, Kerker, etc)but I'd go for the extra $$$ and get the Mugan. You know what you are getting right there. Everyone and their brother made aftermarket pipes for the R back then, and alot of them you can't tell what they are anymore. I know I've got a couple of aftermarket 82R pipes around, and even with a couple pipe shoot out articles in vintage mags I got, I've yet to identify them.

Yeah, I agree. The Mugen pipe looks like the way to go. The DG pipe I saw at their website didn't impress me, the appeareance and fabrication looked pretty shotty. But appearance isn't everything, that is why I started this thread, but now I know it's not that great of pipe, especially for $220.

Hey I'd hate to see someone get the wrong pipe and be stuck with it...Make sure that the pipe I.D. at the exhaust flange will fit the stock flange. Mugen had a bigger exhaust flange pipe I.D. and won't fit the 250R or the 300 kit without a exhaust flange bushing.
Here are some photo's of the bushing, pipe I.D.'s of the Mugen with the bushing, a Mugen without the bushing, a stock pipe and the flange.

I received my Mugen pipe and intake adapter today. I hope to get my pipe installed this weekend. Thanks Bigbore!!
The intake adapter I got is not going to work, the bolt pattern is off by 20mm for the size boot I need. So it looks like I'm going with a fl350 boot. Thanks for the help anyway 3razors.:)

When you mount that pipe you'll need to cut a small spacer out of 1/4" or 3/8" tubing or pipe, about 1/2 wide to space out the pipe from the frame.

I remember hearing about someone that bought a bunch of them, and sold them on Ebay. I bought one before they were out, at the NICE price.:headbang:
They also used to have the whole intake boot for the air cooled, but I asked today and they are all gone too. Sorry!

Sorry to hear no luck Avio. Even though the water cooled r's intakes are angled, it might work on yours but you would have to ditch the airbox. I know the bolt pattern is def the same, just the boot is angled instead of straight.
Side note. Has anyone ever actually seen one of those Mugen 360 cylinder kits? I would like to see a real life pic of one.

Here's mine. New in the box, well part of it out of the box for the pic's. Last week I talked with Freddie, the owner of Al Bakers XR's Only to find out if they could do the machine work on the cases and machine the crank. I found out that the original machinist that was working for Al back in the early 80's, that was doing the work on the 360 conversions back then, is still there and was excited to hear that I had one of the kits. He almost fell over when I told him that it was still NIB. In a few weeks I’ll put up some shots of the motor going in.

Oh Doctor....that is premium Bigbore! Looks like it has very large transfer ports for the 360 piston. Very unique! Thanks for the pics
Now don't forget to mix the gas and oil after installation, I'd hate to see that one seize. lol jk

Got the Mugen pipe installed!! It runs great!! Can not wait til I put on the 39mm PWK. I still need to get a twist throttle and air filter, then it will be ready for the dyno. Here are some pics of the pipe installed. Should I leave the exhaust guards on or off??

 Looks GOOD! I say the guards make the lines flow into the fender better, but that's my opinion..........:D
