Clutch Adjustment question

I had recently adjusted the clutch per the manual instructions before I started having the problem where the 70 wouldn't shift from Neutral to First gear. First I loosened the lock nut and turned the adjuster clockwise a turn as the manual said. It just turned freely in this direction. Then, when I went counterclockwise until I felt resistance, I had to turn it a several full turns to feel the resistance, then backed it off 1/8 turn from there as the manual said.

Is this right? It has been a long time since I've adjusted one of these clutches but it just seemed like I had to turn it a long way.

Did I do everything right, or did I get something out of adjustment to where it is causing my problem. Could something be stuck? The trike did shift properly 3 or 4 times after the adjustment before it got stuck in neutral, but it was after the first post-adjustment ride that the problem arose.
