Does anyone know if GM made a 4x4 truck in '61?

There's a '61 GMC 4x4 for sale in the paper, and the guys swears that it's an original 4x4. Is this guy giving me a load of :bs: ???

I think gm did make a four wheel drive that year. I am not 100% sure though. You sure don't see them driving around anymore.

Didn't they have soemthing called Apache's in the late 50's that were both 4 and 2 wheel drive? Get the vin number from him and check it out, it might say two or 4 wheel drive.

Yeah, I think the '58 or '59 Apache's could come in 4wd, but I'm not completely sure.

The guy is asking $1500 of this truck. It has a 350 (burns oil), 4spd, and 36" Swampers (50% thread). Body is rusty, but not completly rotten.

I'm just thinking, you would most likely need a lift to fit 36" tires... Now where would you find a liftkit for a '61 GMC 4x4? Unless someones bothers twice removed cousin made a backyard mechanic special lift.

So many questions. I wonder how stong the diffs and Tcases were back then?

Maybe the guy is bull****ting me, and it's actually a '61 body on a '80-something frame and drivetrain.

Levi,

Ford made 4x4 trucks in 61 I believe that was the first year for a ford production truck, Gm on the other hand didn't produce a true production 4x4 until later on, the earlier Gm trucks were NAPCO conversions I believe NAPCO was an authorized aftermarket company and I believe you could order a GM truck with the Conversion!!!

Yeah, I don't think I will be buying it. I just found out it's a longbox stepside. I hate the way those look. Oh well, I guess I'll keep lookin for another 4x4.

Nuthinspecial, I know, I have a '65 and '70 Chevy sitting around, man do those trucks rust once you let them sit for awhile.

I wonder if a long box step side is even rarer? I'm sure if chevy made a 4x4 in 58/59 they made ones in the early 60's. You'd probalby be able to go look at a 70s chevy 4x4 frame and a 80s 4x4 chevy frame and then go compare what you've seen on them to the one that is for sale.
