View Full Version : Carb Slide at Wide Open Throttle

I had my carb (stock PE from 85 250r) off today to put in a carb rebuild kit. I realized that at wide open throttle the slide is not fully open. Can I adjust my throttle cable in some way to fix this? The slide lacks about an inch from the top when I open the throttle all the way. The only adjustment I know of is throttle free play, and I don't think that will solve this problem. Any help would be super appreciated. I'm about to mount a new (to me) PT High Rev and reckon WOT should be functioning correctly.

Thanks!

if it's a thumb throttle it could be that the thumb lever has spun on the pin that connects the thumb part to the part that connects to the cable. if the cable part or the thumb part spins on that shaft the thumb will bottom out without actualy pulling the cable the full amount it should. you can try pulling the nut off the bottom of the shaft that holds the thumb lever on and see if you can twist it twords you then tighten it back up. that might solve your problem.

very far fetched but could you possibly have the wrong cable on it? too long of a cable (3 foot housing-3'6" cable v.s. 3 foot housing-3'3" cable) would do exactly what your describing.
if your coming up an inch short ( lol ) then i dont think theres any way you can adjust that out even if your freeplay is so far off the throttle almost bottoms out before it starts to pull the slide...

i'd first check out the throttle housing (even if it's a twist throttle it could still break the hole out and slip the cable.) then check the cable itself it all of that looks good.

j.m.o. take it for what it cost ya....

I'm goin to try your first suggestion, but am afraid it could actually be your second suggestion.
This is the throttle that's on there. I don't know if the person that owned this trike before me put this wrong throttle on there with the wrong cable too, or not...

That's the wrong throttle. It doesn't have the same pull as a 250R throttle. You just need the right one and you should be good to go.

Thats a 350X throttle or a TRX.You need an atc thumb throttle to get the play out.

Does it have to be an 85 thumb throttle? Can I replace this one a TRX250r throttle with an 85 ATC250r throttle cable? The TRX250r thumb throttles seem to be more available on ebay, etc.

i know guys who run huge carbs with that throttle......you need to grind the houseing to let it open farther then ajust as needed.

some times they modify the cable and run a ajuster on the carb top

On the cr500conversion, AND tri-z im running that thumb throttle with 39.5pj carbs and they open all the way. Something isnt right. Take all the slack out, See if it opens all the way.

But that throttle will open all the way.

OOH also got it on my banshee its opening 2 37mm pj's

Did yours look like this on the inside before you ground off? It looks to me like the cable holder will hit the side of the housing even if I were to grind that stopper portion away. In this pic I'm holding at near WOT just for illistration purposes.

No big fret, though, I picked up an 86 ATC250r throttle that should work (crossing fingers).

Any 85-86 ATC 250R throttle or TRX250R throttle will work. You could modify the one you have but you'd have to push the throttle farther. The R throttle will open it farther with the same short motion. It'll make sense when you see the inside of it.

now see how much further the 86r throttle will pull the cable if it were attached at almost WOT (I'm I'm not even holding it quite straight, either). As soon as I get some time I'll slide this dude on and hopefully the slide will open all the way up. Thanks for the help everyone hopefully I can wrap this part of the project up now.
