A freind of mine just bought an '84 Tecate today. Original tires, grips, and chain and sprockets. It has been a barn bike since about '86. Here's the problem: It has to be pull started at about 15-20 mph to get it to run. It idles fine and runs like a scalded-assed-ape when it's still cool. When it warms up, it refuses to idle and just doesn't want to run. We cleaned the carb, checked the jets and float level, and glass-beaded the fly wheel. No help. It has over 160 lbs. of compression, so the rings are fine. I think that the stator is trying to shoot craps, but I am unsure because I have never dealt with A-model Tecates. Any ideas?

Thanks for the props on our find. It was owned by a guy out here at the sand dunes who was frustrated with it and wanted it gone. We cleaned the carb by totally disassembling it and washing it in a parts washer. It looked brand new on the inside. No varnish, gum, or anything. The slide wasn't even scratched. My freind has been working on ATVs for about twenty years. He raced one in '84 and said his acted the exact same way before he sold it after putting three stators in it. We will check the reeds just to be sure because time may have taken its toll on them. The plastic isn't pretty because it's faded and chalky, but the rest of the bike is sweet.

at the very worst you can get a new flywheel/stator assembly from rickystator for only $200. do you have any other carbs you can try swapping onto it to test it out?

My freind is a dealer, so he's looking into the price for a new stator from Kawasaki. We don't have any other carbs to use, but like I said, the carb has no problems and is practically brand new. None of the passages or jets in it are clogged. He said that his old Tecate did the same thing before the stator went out each time.

Thats the down fall of the tecate. stators fail to quick. most of the ones you find sitting are because of the stator. most people dont know that rue teen maintainace on the tecate changing out stators. :demon:
