View Full Version : IMS Fuel Tanks
Do the IMS plastic fuel tanks come with a nice finish or do you have to paint them?
I was looking to replace my damaged 350X tank with one, do they usually fit well?
Thanks....

350X, i have both the I.M.S. and Clarke plastic gas tanks Both finishes are nice but for closeness to stock the clarke is better looking. and rob is right NEVER paint a plastic tank there is no paint avalible that can withstand the gas fumes evaporating through the plastic
Thanks for the tip......The Clarke tank is less expensive also.
Mr. ATC.......I saw some pictures awhile ago of a 350X that you restored.
Do you have some pictures you could send me?
I'm currently working on a full restoration of my 86 350X. I have a new swing arm, axel and billet carrier coming and I am getting ready to sand blast the frame (maybe I should post some pics). I'm trying to decide on a color scheme.......I looked into getting the frame chromed, that will cost about 250.00.....Haven't decided yrt.
Thanks

Mine was painted 2 yrs ago, with a pearl coat, its got one little bubble in it from where me knee rubs it...you wanna check it out, im across the bridge in Gig Harbor, i also know a good local chrome/powdercoat shop in Bremerton if your looking for prices..:lala:
Dune Rash........Let me know what shop that is in Bremerton and I'll check them out.
If you want email me your contact info and I'll see if I can get over there one day to check it out.

I have the IMS 3.5 gallon tank on my 85' 250r. It looks okay, but my boots do leave scratches on the sides of it. It does come in handy for those long dune runs at Glamis, though.

What about the "Desert tank" for the ATC 250R 85/86 model. Has anyone seen a newer version of that? I want to get one for my bike since we go on some long rides every now and then.

Dirtsquirt: i had a friend do it..hes a painting contractor...we used all PPG paint products..it has everything to do with what primer you use...My neighbor is a "hotrod" builder, hes going to do it next, we talked about having some flames coming off the rad. scoops onto the tank

dunerash, i'm not trying to start a fight but you yourself said the paint is bubbling up. that is not due to your knee. that would cause wear marks. bubbling up is due to gas evaporating through the plastic. this is not just my opinion but that of my cousin that is a PPG certified painter for 18yrs. i had asked him a while back about painting the tank yes you can get it to stick but it will not last. even you said its bubbling up which is what Rob and i were talking about

I never said it would last forever.. ive painted it twice in 5yrs.. I looked at the date on the reciepts from the last time I got supplies, was in Oct 2000, so for me its worth it:)

Paint or not I still say plastic tanks are the ugliest thing I've ever seen. There is nothing that fits and looks like a stock steel tank.
I have a plastic tank..... dunno who made it.....it DIDN'T FIT!!! I DESPISED it so I replaced it with a steel tank off ebay.
As far as the range issue.... I don't know how much range my 350X has with the stock tank, does anyone know? I would rather carry spare gas in a jug on the grab bar than have a plastic tank that's larger.

my bro and I ran our 350Xs onto reserve one time in Idaho. Went ~17 miles through the dunes to the other end, spent 3 or 4 hours playing on 500ft tall sand, and we both had to hit reserve within 100 yd of the same place on the way back, about 2 miles from camp. we were both going fast enough to get the petcock switched and the motor running before the trike stopped rolling.
