I have an '85 tri-z that will idle all day, when I give it throttle it wants to die. It acts like its running out of fuel, any way to check the fuel pump or could it be something as easy as an air filter? Trike has had all fuel filters changed and electrical replacedand new gaskets. The trike has the fuel pump with the petcock but parts manual shows another one external from the fuel pump, trike does not have this, it should run with out it right? Don't know much about this fuel system.

I dont know a thing about tri`z`s but i can tell from what you are saying that it is a fuel problem most lickly. First let me ask you a few questions. Was it running good before and just quite running good?. Or is this something that you just got and have never had running?.

You can try the basics like moving your needle up to allow more fuel in when you open the throttle. And make sure you have a good flow of gas getting to the carb. And also make sure that your carb isnt just dirty and have something stuck in the main jet. And also check your float to make sure it is letting enough gas in for the carb to work with.

Also make sure your exhaust isnt plugged with old oil and carbon. Some times when they get plugged it make it hard to pass more then a little air through it.

That might give you some things to look at. But i cant help you at all on there pump setups. Maybe some of the guys with z`s can give you advice on that.

You have a fuel pump and a petcock. will run with out petcock.
did you clean the silt bowl on the fuel pump. if the pump is not working you will not start the bike. so it is working. you may have to clean the carb sounds like dirt in it. not getting fuel.

Did you by chance just do any head work on it? If the timing chain is a notch or two off it may idle, but when givin gas, it will choke. Just a thought.

When i got my Tri z it set for 6 years. it would not idle. In Midrange it ran ruff. After a good cleaning of carb and fuel system it ran fine.
