OK, I purchased a new carb for the 1980 185 I traded some stuff for. It ran for a little and died when I bought it. Tearing down the carb reveled rust varnish, and some dubious looking parts. I bought a new one on ebay. When I got the carb, I installed it, but still no go. A check of the plug, no spark. New coil, nice blue spark. Now, I can get it to start, still. Even with starter fluid. I've adjusted the brass screw at the bowl, 2 and half out from closed. Where am I screwed up? Even with the adjustment off, I figured it would fire with the starting fluid!

How much ? Gotta number ? The reason I ask is because if it is on it's stock bore and rings, chances are you ain't got enough.

Nope, no number. It's a hard pull, and the decompression lever is needed, or it kicks back.

I had a problem kind of like that with my 185 and I was sure it had compression because it would pull hard and would kick back like that. What I found was it had jumped a cpl of teeth on the cam and it was the valves ever so slightly hitting the top of the piston.

I have been worrying about this.... It does feel like it's a little out of time. I guess I get to take it apart. Lucky me. What wears out, the chain, or the tensioner?

OK, I don't have a book for this bike. How much of a pain in the but is this? Where do I start?

adjusting the timing is pretty easy on this. I was going to say it would be the same way as on a 200x. You just line up the TDC mark on the flywheel with the TDC mark on the cam gear. Fairly straight forward. Just make sure you don't flip the cam around. Really easy to do.

I get that part, but I'm wondering if I have to split the cases, all the other fun stuff?

On a 200x all you had to do was take off those two little round covers; one for the stator so you can rotate it and the other to watch the timing mark. Shouldn't have to split the cases at all on the 185 either. Maybe take off the pull rope.. i honestly couldn't tell ya
It's not that hard to change the timing chain. pull the left covers, stator and all. take CDI off head gets you to the cam & timing gear. you have to pull the cam out to get the chain off. So make sure your at TDC or it will not come out.

I had the exact same problem and realised that taking the carb on and off had ruined the seal between the inlet and the engine head, a common sign of this is fuel bieng forced into your air filter, very cheap to fix and quick to try. just replace the o ring and for good meassure wak a bit of fuel resistant sealer on aswell, Job done.
