Question: Is the outer spring on the gear shift shaft supposed to be on the inside or the outside of the gear shift plate? On service honda it appears to be on the outside but when I opened up my sidecase it was on the inside of the gear shift plate?

Do you have a picture? I am having a hard time seeing it in my mind.

Is the spring in front of that gear shift mechanism; also behind that front c-clip, OR is it behind the gear shift mechanism? Reason I ask is because mine had no front C-clip and the spring was behind the mechanism. The Parts Fische shows the spring behind the mechanism?

Is this for the 83-85? It is suppossed to push the rod onto the "star" looking gear, should be outside..or under c-clip.. If you try to install backwards it wont allow it to "connect" up to the "star" gear which is connected to your gearshift drum...
So even if I said that wrong,,and from a trouble shooting perspective; if it is stopping your plate from connecting to the star its probably backwards,, I hope that made sense..

Yes I understand. The mechanism and star aren't backwards. Even when the spring was behind the mechanism, it still shifted but the mechanism was pretty crooked when compared to the shift shaft. Well if thats the case, I got to get a new c-clip for the front, because mine didn't have one?

The C-clip should keep it all nice and snug.. I would definatly get it.
What you dont want is the the shifter shaft floating through the cases. I havent been into a 200x in a long time, but if I recall correctly a slight slide one way or another on the shaft itself causes a slippage off the star gear.. The case cover also helps keep it in place as well (drawing again from memory)
I am thinking it was extremely easy to reverse alot "mechanisms" on the clutch side of the shaft.
What you can do is have all installed except the cover and physically watch the shifter shaft and plates do their Job. You just might have to keep your finger on the shaft and pressed in like it is suppossed to be.
But it will show you the tendencies to float and so on..

Yes, I even did that by putting my finger on the shaft and shifting the gears to see if it all works. I think the reason why that spring popped off was because of the slippage in the shaft like you said. Thanks for all the information.
