if i have low compression in my 86 tri-z, are the reed valves suspect? supposedly the top end was redone just before i bought it.

Maybe you have to Break it in First, Add some Boyesen Reeds !

Reed will NOT have anything to do with your compression! All they do is open on the intake stroke and close to keep the pressure from going out them, and forces it up the transfer ports.
You may need to brake it in, but it should still have plenty of compression even before that. What is your compression? You may have gotten hosed!
you may have an acrylic rebuild. people say any thing to sell a trike.

i'll check my compression as soon as i can. the other concern i have is coolant in my tranny. i was told that it is likely my water pump shaft seal. i had that appart and both the shaft and seal look fine. i have a new seal on the way regardless, but is there any other way for coolant to get there? perhaps cracking of some kind is common??

The impeller seal is the only possible point of entry for coolant in the gearbox, and they typically need to be periodically replaced. Any Yamaha dealer will have one on hand because its the same seal used in the Banshee.

thats not the culprit... you'll probably find out it's not a new topend.. thats a common lie when selling a used bike..

Wow. From not knowing if his compression is low to assuming he got ripped off. Kind of leaping to conclusions arent we? Or is there other information I dont see in this thread?
Reeds have nothing to do with compression, and if you lose a reed petal, it will be extremely difficult to start, will run horribly, and youll have to keep it at 1/2 throttle or better just to keep it running. Youll never lose a stock steel reed, but fiber ones wear out eventually.
