1. what kind of coolent to use
2. what are the problems of using a stonger/weaker fuel mixture than recommended?
3. Throttle prob:
I took the carb apart and cleaned and it now idls better and for about the 1.st hr of riding you could notice a good improvement on preformance but the next 1.5 hrs it quit working so well... when i would lay into it about 1/2 way through each gear it would seem to flood the carb or somthing.. i just lost power. but if you didnt ride too hard to worked just fine, only when you floor'd it. i used a slightly weaker fuel mix this time just cause. and the coolent may not have been up to par.
dont know if that would have anything to do w/ it... dont think it would be coolent though.
thanks in advance.
btw when i say weaker i mean less oil to gas:doh:

50/50 water antifreeze mixture is what i always run,,,if you always run the same fuel ratio it will help,as far as the running problem,, do a plug check to see if your rich or lean,,, a to low float level will cause some problemsalso ,, but it sounds like a fuel restriction problem to me.. pull the fuel line off and see if you have a good fuel flow,,,

I wouldn't recommend running "tap" water thru them, use 50/50 mix with distilled water, the radiators and engine are aluminum. Tap water tends to eat them up.:( If its not the float bowl, or plugged line, might be to big of a main jet, or low compression, both of these make your bike sound like your "running out of fuel" on the top end. How lean a mix are you running? Good luck

thanks.. but now that you talk about the fuel restriction and the float bowl i see i forgot to mention somthing:doh: :
every once in a while it will leak gas through the tube on the bottom of the carb. maybe i have a problem with the floater:confused: i am not sure exactly how it is suppose to work but i get the general idea. I'm sure the fuel flow is fine... oh yea and i only have a 2+ gal gastank so i just dump 16oz of oil to the full thing it is a little better than 16:1 and i think i had almost 24:1 last time i put gas in but i didnt use a full tank.

I have about the same problem with the '85 250R I recently bought. It fouled the plug too, was kind of wet when I took it out. As for the fuel/oil ratio, the Honda service manual says 20:1. The previous owner told me 50:1. I will probably go with 20:1 from the manual. Any recommendations?

i use 32:1 for my 86 r and tecate. For antifreeeze, I use engine Ice, it works really good, but expensive. I had the same problem my r today, it had good mid but no top. I am currently running a 170 main(stock 34mm carb) and needle clip at the top(lean) with great results. the only mods I have is a paul turner exhaust and small holes drilled in the airbox lid, and instead of the snorkel I pit piece of pipe with a foam air filter. I would say that you are running too rich or using the wrong plug. stock they use a 148 or 150, most with pipes use 160-165. When I had the snorkel on it was running alittle rich with a 165 and needle on the bottom. hope this helps

On the antifreeze: Use stuff made for aluminum radiators and engines.
I believe any thing with a GM Northstar (isn't that the name of the alum block) safe rating will work.
As for premix ratios. I run 50:1 with Bel-Ray HR1 So far my bike hasn't blown up yet and the top end still looks new.

Genuine Honda Antifreeze/Coolant at 50/50 with distilled water and you will never have a rot problem due to antifreeze. I've worked on Honda cars with 200K miles on them that have used it and no corrosion at all in radiator or coolant passages. Its formulated for Aluminum heads/blocks. Some of the best antifreeze made aside from some serious race only type products. Go to a Honda Auto dealer and buy it there...somewhere around 10-15 a gallon I think. A gallon should last quite a while.
As far as the fuel mixture, get a 5 gallon jug and mix it that first. Don't dump oil in the tank and then gas and try mixing it in tank. My apologies if that's not what youre doing, sounded like that was how you were.

my plug finaly fouled yesterday. (right in the bottom of a huge ravine of course!) had to push it back through a creek too!
would too much/less oil in gas cause the plug to foul sooner?
after i found another plug it ran perfect and didnt have any of those power drops so maybe the plug was just going bad:confused:
