on this 85 250 big red the left side. the hub keps getting loose?
this weekend there were alot of bumps and such and the hub got loose, then i tightened it but had to put a washer behind the castle nut for the cotter pin (welding rod) to prperly fit between the castle part. is there somthing in the carrier that would allow the axle to work it's way out and cause the hub to get loose? what does the hub butt up against when you tighten it, the bearing? what kinda tourqe rating should be on there?
anyone have page on that rear setup in a manual or something they could scan?
Thanks, Howard

There should be at least one washer on there with the castle nut anyways. Did you have it apart before this problem showed up?. And as far as i know the hub should just slide on to the axle and stop. If it keeps wiggeling around and seems loose. Then i would guess that maybe the threads in the hub might be worn out. Does the other side seem fine?. Have you tried switching the hubs around and seeing if the one on the other side in good shape?. If it is the hub. You should be able to find one off of ebay. Or post a thread in the classified section here. Maybe one of the members would have one to get rid of.

On the SX when the hub gets loose it's because the bearings are on their way out. :bash:

dads does the sx and the big red have bearing on the outside ends of the shaft or just in the center like the other models?.

I am not at all familiar with the shaft drive models at all.

Fuzzy, i hadn't ried to mess with it yet but swappin sides might help figure out if its a hub or not i guess. i think the bearings are on the ends. is it hard to swap out the bearings in the rear? i think there are seals on the ends too i think.
any tips or pictures would help out.
i can tighten it back up but then it loosend up in a day of riding. thanks, Howard

The only bearing i see are the three that go right into the differenctial.

You can see the stopper on the alxe shaft itself where the hubs should butt up to. If the hud is sliding all the way on to it. And you are useing a cotter pin to keep the nut from moving and turning itself off. There is no way the hub should be coming loose. Or at least not loose enough to be noticable.

When you get off after riding and lift up the rear tire and wiggle it around is that when it seems loose?. Or can you actually turn the nut on another turn or so after riding?.

I am going to have to side with dads on this one. It sounds like you might have bearing trouble. If you lift up the rear of the trike and move either tire there shouldnt be any movement at all of the axle moving around in the houseing. So if you like try to move the tire back and forth towards the front of the trike it should be solid and not give at all. If it wiggles a bit you could have work out bearing in there allowing the shaft to move more then it should. Making it feel like a tire is loose.

Sorry about all the questions. Just trying to give you the best idea of what it could be. I hear them rearends can be a bit spendy to repair and we want to make darn sure if that is where your problem is.

O and the job is easy as pie. Bearings are waasy to change, but there $35 a pop. seals are cheap.

Well let me show you the big picture. :demon:
The outer bearings clamp between a collor (bearing stop) and the hub, Onced tightend they only come loose when the bearings start going to
