Just got this gen1 R as a trade for a blown up 82 kx80. Bike runs great looks like it has an aftermarket pipe but no idea which silencer is basically an empty beer can no guts in it, axle wobbles in the carrier so im not sure if its bearings or a cracked carrier yet. Tires are ok and brakes work. Its a little rough but with a little money here and there i think it will be a nice little bike. First up is taking off those wiiiiide stock gen 1 forks and putting a 200x front suspension on it, then buying an 85r carb and a k&n filter with outerwears then maby a pro link setup of an 85 or maby just an extension if my swing arm is ok. I have a couple questions since i have never owned a gen1 before first up what do i need to do to run a 200x front suspension or does it just bolt on and what kneck bearings do i use? Also as far as the 85r carb should i run a different reed cage or what mine looks like it has a spacer or something ive heard of guys running the cr250 reed cage what benefits does it have? and what about rear suspension does anything bolt in id love to run the pro link out of an 85 r what would i need to do to run it or at least maby the gen 2 250r rear suspension bolts in? And finally 400ex hubs do those go right on or are there modifications needed are stock 400ex hubs wider or do you need to get the wider 400ex aftermarket hubs? Thanks for your support and I hope to be posting alot moer progress pics!

Good score!
Bike runs great looks like it has an aftermarket pipe but no idea which silencer is basically an empty beer can no guts in it,
Pics!

No biggie either way.
Tires are ok and brakes work. Its a little rough but with a little money here and there i think it will be a nice little bike.
Good good!
First up is taking off those wiiiiide stock gen 1 forks and putting a 200x front suspension on it,
You'll love the 200x front!
then buying an 85r carb and a k&n filter with outerwears
Try to get an 86 & up trx carb - oval slide instead of the 85 round slide!
then maby a pro link setup of an 85 or maby just an extension if my swing arm is ok.
Save yourself a lot of hassle and get a 1st gen extended swingarm - trying to run an 85 swinger requires some fab work, a lot of fab work really. Chain and brakes on opposite sides etc etc
I have a couple questions since i have never owned a gen1 before first up what do i need to do to run a 200x front suspension or does it just bolt on and what kneck bearings do i use?
Just a direct bolt on!!
Also as far as the 85r carb should i run a different reed cage or what mine looks like it has a spacer or something ive heard of guys running the cr250 reed cage what benefits does it have?
Since you're not running an airbox - feel free to run any year 250R reed cage you want. Look for a V-force2 setup if you can find one.
and what about rear suspension does anything bolt in id love to run the pro link out of an 85 r what would i need to do to run it or at least maby the gen 2 250r rear suspension bolts in?
Again, a lot of work if you wanna do it. I just suggest an extended swingarm and a nice shock from work's performance.
And finally 400ex hubs do those go right on or are there modifications needed are stock 400ex hubs wider or do you need to get the wider 400ex aftermarket hubs? Thanks for your support and I hope to be posting alot moer progress pics!
400ex hubs bolt right on and will make the rear end wider by about 3 inches or so - if you wanna go even wider get the extended 300/400 ex hubs.
Good luck and good on you for giving an old fooler a second chance on life.

FYI it looks like it might have a terry fork kit sticker on the forks. if it has the fork kit those are very vintage and rare i'd hold on to them or if you sell it don't give them away.
that pipe also looks like a high quality cone pipe
finally i'm not positive but that looks like a cal fab swingarm.
you may have a vintage aftermarket galore diamond in the rough...i'd be very hesitant about *******izing it just yet

i second black sheep, I can make out CAL on the swing arm, you may have a old racer! that filter just bolted onto the carb was also something they did in the ole days, Id crack outop the reeds and see if the cylinder had some work!

are those fork adjusters on the top ????

Yea theres a sticker on the forks that say terry cable i dont think there adjusters just caps with a valve to put air in them? The swingarm says cal fab on the side is that stock length or just aftermarket aluminum piece the bearing in it are garbage too much play to even ride the bike are the bearings still get able? I already have the forks off the kneck bearings were so bad it would hardly turn so i think ill just go with the 200x front end and sell the forks that were on it id love to get my hands on a 300 kit again like i had on my white and purple 83' or just run a DG pineapple head i love how they look does anyone have one? There is one on ebay that says it was on a fl250 odyssey would it work on the atc 250r? Gonna keep digging into it dont wanna go radical just refinish might just end up tearing it all down and having the frame powder coated and make it cherry. Will keep pics coming!

Don't put air in them.
The swingarm says cal fab on the side is that stock length or just aftermarket aluminum piece
That's a score right there! Might be stock length - but - regardless, a very nice piece. I hadn't seen the pics when I replied first.

Yeah, you can still find bearings.
I already have the forks off the kneck bearings were so bad it would hardly turn so i think ill just go with the 200x front end and sell the forks that were on it
You'll love the 200x front on her.

300's can still be found used once in a while - same with the DG heads. I run a 300 myself.
I saw a DG head on ebay last week with a BIN of 150.

yea theres a dg that says it came off a fl250 odyssey is it the same head as a 250r atc or it cant be used? coould i use a v force 3 reed cage made for the trx and waterpumpers or no it seemd like a nice cage to use and the bike alrdy has a reed cage spacer in it
yea theres a dg that says it came off a fl250 odyssey is it the same head as a 250r atc or it cant be used?
I'm not 100% sure so I can't say yes or no. If someone here doesnt answer you in time ask over on the 81-84 fooler forum - one of the guys over there will know for sure.

Yes you can. :headbang:

The FL250 head only has 4 stud holes, whereas the R head has 5 or is it 6, I don't remember.

o ok gotcha well then ill just keep my eyes out has anybody ever researched maby putting a larger sleeve in a stock cylinder? What are the benefits of the oval slide carb over a round or square? Also where can i get bearings and seals for that cal fab swinger got the axle out and they are trashed but the swing arm looks good and i dont see any cracks or anything in the carrier might either powder coat or polish it im not sure yet my 83r was powdercoated a dark purple with white accents might go the same way.
