I need to replace the "screen" in the gas tank on my 1985 Big Red 250ES. I took off the petcock and ordered a "screen set" from Parts Fish. It came with the new plastic screen/filter, a small rubber "O" ring and a small, Black plastic sleeve. The O ring appears to be too large to fit into the seat of the petcock. My questions are:
1) where does the Black plastic "sleeve" go? Does it fit near the top of the brass tube on the petcock just to hold the screen more securely?
2) I assume the O ring slides down the brass pipe and fits near the seal, right?
3) does the screen/filter just slide over the tube and fit loosely?
(none of these parts were on the old petcock when I removed it)
ANY HELP is much appreciated - MANY THANKS! Oldman - the world's worst mechanic!

The parts drawing at partsfiche shows an exploded view of the petcock assembly. On my 250sx (and 350x) the 0 ring goes on the outside of the plastic strainer tube. I have never seen a little black piece. The stock strainer tube has a oring up inside it that the end of the brass tube fits in. maby the black plastic piece goes there?? The way it is supposed to work is when the petcock is in the on position. the fuel goes through the end of the brass tube. Since it sticks up, and based on the way the plastic strainer fits on, this will not draw fuel all the way to the bottom of the tank. When you put the petcock in the reserve position, the fuel goes through the hole in the body of the petcock (near the bottom of brass tube). To get there, the fuel goes through the bottom of the plastic strainer tube, between the inner O-ring and the bottom.
When I get home tonight, I have a old 350x petcock and tube. I can take some pics if you still do not have it back together.

Many thanks for your help! The little Black plastic "sleeve" fits snugly over the metal tube on the petcock - I'll slide it on the top of the tube and leave it there. Fuzzy, you're right in that the Black O ring fits snugly on the new plastic screen - toward the bottom tank is obviously where it belongs - I'll put all together and see if it works. Again - many thanks to all who had suggestions - much appreciated! Oldman
