mostly due to the fact that they appealed to the under 18 crowd and parents thought they looked much safer than a dirt bike( in the late sixties there was talk about outlawing those as well) and were will to buy one for their snot sucker, when little billy got hurt mommy and daddy were very sure that it couldnt have been his fault(i.e. theirs for purchasing it) so it must have been those evil engineers. I have know several of these idiots and I am sure every body here has heard it whenever 3 wheeler is mentioned, the imediate reply...say it with me..."3 Wheelers are so dangerous" trying to point the blame beyond your own foolishness turns people into morons.
Yah, Like guns kill , Lets band them along with knives forks and sharp sticks..
We better band the car too, More people
died in cars those years than from wheelers.

too many 12yr olds on 75mph sport trikes and lack of proper training/supervision.
anything is dangerous if you're an idiot.
My neighbor was killed on a atc125m, it flipped on him and the handlebars hit him in the throat and he couldnt breath:( . So a cr 500 graphic kit would work?

yeah a cr 500 graphics kit is pretty close u may have to do some cutting, the seat cover wont fit, you would have to get the graphics to compare but a cr 500 is the closet ull get to a match

I believe the finale blow came when the TV show 60 minutes did their report on 3wheelers. Shortly after came the ban.You could buy 3wheelers real cheap after that.

I have some data on ATV accidents throughout the 80's and 90's. It is a 2.4 MB Text file with the data on thousands of accident investigations. It's a hoot to read ! Like a tragic comedy you won't be able to put down ! Actually, it provides valuable insight as to what really goes on when people ride ATV's. PM with an e-mail if you want a copy.
Lots of great stories in there, like:
8-12-86 - |TN|A 14 YEAR OLD MALE RECEIVED FATAL INJURIES WHILE HE WAS RIDING HIS |THREE WHEELED ATV ON A PAVED ROAD IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD. HE ROUNDED |A CURVE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD HITTING A SCHOOL BUS HEAD ON. |
And this one:
8-12-86 |NC|TWO BOYS, AGES 12 AND 14, WERE RIDING DOUBLE ON A 3-WHEELED ATV ON A |RAILROAD TRACK. NEITHER DRIVER, NOR PASSENGER WORE A HELMET. THEY |WERE KILLED WHEN A TRAIN STRUCK THEM FROM THE REAR. |
I say Ban the Prairie Dogs ! :
|KS|ON AUGUST 16, 1986, A 10-YEAR-OLD MALE RIDING A 3 WHEELED ATV ON |A MACHINERY TRAIL ROAD. THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL RAN OVER A PRAIRIE |DOG MOUND CAUSING THE ATV TO ROLL TO THE LEFT. HE TURNED THE ATV |TO THE RIGHT, BUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HANDLEBARS DUG INTO THE |GROUND CAUSING THE ATV TO OVERTURN AND THOWING THE VICTIM FROM IT'S |SEAT. THE VICTIM SUSTAINED A SKULL FRACTURE AND FRACTURED CERVICAL |SPINE, WHICH RESULTED IN HIS DEATH.
This one wasn't even running:
|UT|THE PRODUCT INVOLVED IN THIS ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION WAS A 3-WHEELED |ATV. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THE VICTIM, A 2-1/2 YR OLD MALE FELL|OFF OF A PARKED ATV. THE VICTIM'S HEAD BECAME WEDGED BETWEEN THE |FRONT TIRE & THE FRONT FENDER. THE ATV WAS PARKED IN THE VICTIM'S |DRIVEWAY AT A 10 DEGREE ANGLE. THE VICTIM DIED FROM STRANGULATION |AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO FREE HIM FROM THE PRESSURE OF THE FRONT |TIRE ON HIS THROAT.
I think they mean "Thornapple" here :
1-21-87 WI|A 27 YEAR OLD MALE WAS FOUND DEAD, LYING ON HIS BACK, HIS HEAD |ON A ROCK WITH HIS UPTURNED 3 WHEELED ATV NEARBY ON THE GRASS & |DIRT COVERED RURAL PATH HE WAS TRAVELING. IT IS THOUGHT THAT A |THRONAPPLE THORN FROM AN OVERHANGING TREE BRANCH PIERCED HIS CHEEK. |CAUSING HIM TO LOSE CONTROL & FALL FROM THE VEHICLE.
Did You see the pic of the board member on here riding with his young daughter ? That reminded Me of this:
20030407 |FL|A 13-YEAR-OLD FEMALE WAS RIDING ON A 3-WHEELED ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE IN|A GRASSY, OPEN, DRY RETENTION FIELD. SHE HAD TAKEN HER HANDS OFF THE |ATV'S HANDLEBARS THEN THE VEHICLE HIT A BUMP AND FLIPPED. THE VICTIM |SUSTAINED A HEAD INJURY AND DIED. SHE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET.
|CA|A 21-YEAR OLD MALE DRIVING A THREE-WHEELED ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE WAS |FATALLY INJURED WHEN HE EXPERIENCED LOSS OF CONTROL AND STRUCK |OBJECT. HE WAS GOING AT AN EXCESSIVE SPEED ON A PUBLIC WET-CLAY DIRT |ROAD WHICH CAUSED HIM TO HYDROPLANE. HE LEFT THE ROAD AND STRUCK A |TREE; HIS VEHICLE UNDERWENT ROLLOVER. INVESTIGATORS FOUND PIECES OF |HIS HELMET STUCK TO THE TREE.
|NE|A 14-YEAR-OLD MALE WAS RIDING HIS 3-WHEELED ATV ON A COUNTY ROAD WHEN|HE FAILED TO YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY AT AN INTERSECTION AND COLLIDED |WITH A STOCK TRAILER BEING TOWED BY A PICKUP TRUCK. THE PICKUP |DRIVER LOST CONTROL, PICKUP SKIDDED AND ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES, |TRAILER CAME UNHITCHED. THE 14-YEAR-OLD VICTIM WAS DRAGGED UNDER |THE THE TRAILER FOR APPROX. 50 YARDS. THE 14-YEAR-OLD VICTIM DIED |LATER IN THE HOSPITAL OF SEVERE HEAD AND TORSO TRAUMA. THE PICKUP |DRIVER WAS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION. NO HELMET WAS WORN BY THE |VICTIM. NO ALCOHOL WAS INVOLVED.

Am I wrong not to se that it was the atv's fault? I feel bad for all the families(including the ones not mentioned). I know everyone has posted good remarks. Mine is where was their common sense part of the brain?
I admit, I used to NO wear a helmet (honestly, I think all I had was a OLD open face street bike helmet my dad had). I guess after I got older, I have seen the dangers. I KNOW THE HELMET THING IS OFF LIMITS!
At my job I have to wear one EVERYTIME we ride. So it is just second nature now.
I found an article about the true ban of 3 wheelers. Does anyone know where it is? I would like to reprint it. The article plainly said " Youg people riding WITHOUT proper training was at fault" That is why when you buy an atv now, you either HAVE to take a training class OR waive your rights/rebate for not taking it.

It all boils down to this: Idiot parents' kid dies on ATC, Lawyers take money from deep pockets.
Lawyers (other than defense attorneys) are the lowest forms of crap on this planet. I am currently being sued for 3/4 of a MILLION DOLLARS by a person who has no case whatsoever, but it will end up costing Me and my business partners $30,000 to defend it. SCUMBAGS.

it was a constant bombardment of lawsuits, most of which reached the decision of rider error. but the CPSC finally found the right judge who agreed with their assumption of design flaws along with manufacturer misrepresention.
they were seeking a total recall but settled on cessation instead....
Canadian courts were leniant on manu's and decisions continued to fall on the side of rider error, thats why rumors of late models possibly floating around in Canada and elsewhere still exist...

Maybe they could come up with something like OSHA did for cowboys for threewheelers :D

I noticed almost every death actually involving a 3 wheeler was related to the idio not wearing a helmet. There are just s many people killing themselves on 4 wheelers now days, Hell maybe more. Quite a few idiots died frome xcessive speed and crashing this last snowstorm we had.

And I have noticed that even though ADULTS have the right to choose, (AND that the "helmet debate" is not allowed on this board) some folks still insist on making snide remarks and comments about those who CHOOSE not to wear one.
Depending on WHAT and HOW i am riding, I may or may not wear one.
At 40 y/o I have the RIGHT to endanger my life while riding my Big Red at 4mph through the woods.
Instead of accepting the freedom to choose, we stab each other in the back by trying to enforce our opinions and choices on others.
It's time to stop this and see the reality of our situation.
If we don't hang together, we will hang separately.
Maybe some of you will see the point of individual choice in a different light when YOUR choices are limited because of the opinions of others.
Do a google on "A.B.A.T.E." if you don't think we face a troubled future for ALL cycles.

...Maybe some of you will see the point of individual choice in a different light when YOUR choices are limited because of the opinions of others.
...hmmm maybe if the 2521, give or take a few, on the C.P.S.C. 3 wheeler accident reports were wearing helmets the rest of us could still CHOOSE to buy trikes.
look if someone wants to be dumb enough to ride without a helmet then so be it but WHY did I have to loose the ability to buy a new trike because of it!!!
But NO! my individual choice to ride new 3 wheelers was taken because a few chose not to wear helmets.
You see MM it goes both ways. unfortunately those who choose to brag about NOT wearing Helmets end up hurting it for those who do.
p.s. the worse head injury I ever had was when i was going just 3-4mph. i wasn't even riding, just moving my bike from one place to another and a stupid little rock decided i needed a split in my skull and a concussion.
