Just got back from glamis. Had a blast. I am sorry I am going to miss the festivities this coming week, but anyways, here is my question.. How should I have my 85 250r set up for hill shooting? It gets up fine just not as fast as I would like. I am getting ready to deploy on Wednesday so it is time to buy some parts for next season.. Right now it is pretty much a stock setup except for an fmf expansion chamber, richter privateer silencer, k&n filter with no lid.. I am also running stock gearing with almost new sand star 20" paddles... The ol girl is carring 190 lbs and I am in 3rd gear pinned up the hill.. 4th boggs down pretty bad... I know I need to change out the fmf. I am also planning on redoing the top end. How do the 310 kits perform? Also who does a good port job. I want to still be reliable as much as possible since I can't stand to be towed.. OK I have rambled enough.. I know lots of questions, sorry... Thanks in advance for the help...

the cheapest way to get more to the ground power is to drop to a 12 on the front sprocket. but a port job on your top end will take you a long way too. porting work is realy the best way to get more power. but if you wanna spend money get a big bore.
my bet is if your wide open in third up the hill and can hold it w/out loosing any wheelspin, droping a tooth on the front is gonna get you realy close to being able to hold 4th. geering is something i been meesin with. you can go to far. i ran 12/41 last season and liked it. i am now at 12/44 and havent tried it yet...

If you want to go just a little faster, then most of the people on this site can set you in the right direction..If you want to go much faster, then I would contact Nate McCoy..he's down in your neck of the woods.

definitely going to have some port work done. most likely gonna do a 310 kit since I am going to open it up anyways. while I am in there I think I will split the cases and check all the bearings and freshen up the bottom end too. the guy I got it from wasn't very nice to it. is there anything I should do to the bottom end while I am in there? I am in hawaii now and I am already having withdrawals..

I went to the cr head gasket, fmf pipe. Before the mods my uncles 450 would barely pull on me at the top after i did the mods i was pulling him.I was able to pull 4th gear nicely. Was a simple mod only drawback it took 50/50 race fuel and 91
I had no probs with the 450 quads.this was stock gearing too.BTW never been a believer in the k&n style filters i had one on my truck it let sand thru my brother had one on his quads both let sand thru, same thing on my sons 90 it came with a k n it gets dirt past it.Only thing i used on my R was a uni Foam filter only never let any dirt or sand through.I had some holes drilled in the lid too.But then again it was always upfront.LOL

#1 mod is loose the sand stars and go with a hauler 8 paddle. If you go up to the 310 you may need even more paddle.
I love v-paddles, they are great for sliding and having fun, not for drag racing up a hill.
Power is useless unless you put it to the ground. This rule holds true in any kind of drag race.
Mine has a ported top end, 1.25mm over bore, 38mm carb, fmf pipe and a slight mill on the head, with 20x11x10 haulers it runs 5th up sand mountain and 4th up thunder. A local guy here has a 310r and he gets me by 2-3 lengths up thunder. You can make it quite fast with the stock jug, plus it is reliable.

X2. I love the sandstars for messing around. But for hill climbing/drag racing they just don't come close to hauler. I think you would see a big difference by just going down one tooth on the front sprocket and putting on a set of haulers.

hey man.... I would check the bearing on the counter ballance. Guy down in winchester bay replaced a clutch for me and while he had it open checked mine. It was going bad. He said if it goes it likes to take the case with it. I am replacing mine rite now.
Have fun in Hawai'i. Dont spen to much at La fem nue...... LOL

Hawaii was fun!!! I spent too much money that could have went to parts but I had fun anyways.. Sitting in Japan now.. Possibly getting ready to head to Singapore.... Thanks guys. Keep the ideas coming... What clutch do you suggest for the dunes? Also what is a good pipe.. I like my silencer. Richter Privateer... I want a different expansion chamber though... Anyone got an old school one they want to sell?

The problem with oldschool expansion chambers is they are hit and miss. If you go with a CT, ESR or PTR you know what your going to get in the power department. ESR easly gets the nod in my oppinion. One of the hills at Rasor this last weekend only the bikes with ESR pipes made it, The FMF's and the one bike with a PTR just couldnt cut it.

What about the cool heads. Are they worth the money? What size dome would I run? I am fine with having to run race gas. With a 310r should I run the pwk39 carb or a 38?
