I'm stumped... I was going to run a hone through my cylinder to deglaze. I have a 3 arm hone with some long stones on it..... I found out quick that they will run into the large gap in the cylinder and go all out of wack. Do I need a ball hone? If so what size do you recommend?

Won't a ball hone catch the edges of the openings in the cylinder also?

I'm stumped...

i had some problem honing my race bikes i dont know how long your stones are but you can find longer stones at most automotive part store and about the ball im not sure on it

Make sure the cylinders you are trying to hone are NOT nikaseal. You can't hone those.
If you just want to glaze break a cylinder. I just use bead hones. It doesn't matter if they go in the ports or not. You need to DE BURR the ports after boring or honing anyway.
I think that most ATC cylinders was cast iron/steel anyway, some of the TRX250 was nikaseal, and most CR cylinders are nikaseal. Unless they have been sleeved.
Just to rattle on a little. Some friends of mine got to talking about which was better nikaseal or sleeved. I told them sleeves are better. Because if you wear the cylinder you would be able to bore around 4 times before replacing sleeve again. Nikaseal you only have 1 piston size to use. A few said the nikaseal was better for performance. I have to agree with that, it transfer heat better from I what I hear?

They may have been CR cylinders. But I have seen 2 TRX that was nikaseal. At least that is what the people was installing them on. I know some people switched parts around a lot. Just to add to what I have seen. Not to start a war/argument.

3 arm hones are for full liner cylinders/brake cylinders....not 2 stroke type cylinders. A Sunnen 4 stone expandable hone will work in a 2 stroke cylinder.

Bead/ball hones work just fine and are prefered for 2 strokes if a Sunnen isn't available. Just get the finest grit hone possible and don't spend a month-of-Sundays in there. Just enough to break the glaze.

Nikisil CAN be honed....using an 800 + grit bead/ball hone...which are hard to find locally. Again....spend just enough time to get the job done and get out....like goin' hawgin' at the local sorority house! LOL!

Thanks for the responses..... I picked up a 240 grit ball hone and a .040 piston and rings. I'm roughly .008 away but I need to wait till the piston gets here so I can fit it properly.

240 too rough for the final cross hatch finish?
