85 250es

Just bought an 85 250es big red for 100 bucks not that bad shape basically knew it had a starting problem. The problem is when I try to start starter turns over but doesnt seem to catch the engine to turn over as well as the kick starter same problem. Any advice what I should look for. or would it be cheaper to find a half decent complete motor that runs and stick in there. thanks for any advice in advance.

Well if you need a motor let me know as I have a few of them, but running condition is unknown. Oh and WELCOME to the boards! Now the starter gears could be toast and not be catching the motor, so a new starter might be in order. The kicker gears could also have issues too, so its really hard to tell 100%. Have you tried to put starter fluid in the carb or air box to see if it would fire? Is it getting spare when kicked over or with starter? You can put a screw driver in the coil and have it next to the motor fins. Then have someone kick it over and see if you see spark.

Well the starter runs but wont turn the motor and the kick wont turn the motor either. So im kinda stuck there with what internals I should be looking that could cause that. And if its gonna cost me more to fix than finding another motor.

hook a chain to it and get a buddie to pull start it for ya.
