I prefer the 1985 as it was the last year, had the 70 painted on the seat, and was from my childhood.

There are 2 generations 73&74 and then like 78-85 or something like that.
Within the generations, they are close to identical. The last few years of the 2nd gen have 4 speed trannies instead of 3 speed for all other years.
My $0.02 - buy on condition and price. Sometimes you can make a killer deal if seller does not know what they have.
Also, on the 2nd gens, it's important to get one with a useable seat pan. You can buy just about anything for them, but good replacement seat pans don't come along very often. You can buy fenders (plastic or FG) gas tanks (plastic) engines, seat covers, seat foam, tires, wheels, etc but nobody makes a seat pan.

Plastic seat pans are available from Sterdy Prouducts for about 60 dollars and ATC Heaven in Australia also has them.

for one to ride i would want an 85, the 85 has an automatic timing chain adjuster and up shift. for one to have around to look at i would go with a 73 or 74.

As far as the old Honda mechanics have told me. Steer clear of the '85, the points constantly need adjusting. Even going so far as to tell me to rebuild my junk '81 engine to use in my stock '85. He also says this is why there are so many good specimens of the '85still out there 25 years later, couldn't keep 'em running(so he says.)
