I have a 85 200x that runs great but the kick starter slips sometimes when you try to start it. I think one of the gears inside is probably worn. I just wanted to know if you had to split the crankcase to get to the kick starter gears of if you could get to them by taking the side case off.

It depends on which gear is worn out. There are two outer ones that you can get to by pulling the little cover off of the side. And there is another main one inside the tranny that turns the crank over.

So pull the side cover off and inspeck the two there. And if they look good. Be prepaired to pull the motor out and split the cases.

beaware that if you buy used parts. that 83/84 are not the same as 85

This is a very common problem for a 200x. All sport/racing trikes have their one main problem, 350x = bad heads, 200x=bad kick start gears, tri-z=water pump problems?, Tecates= Fly wheel problems. can't think of one for a ATC 250r.

Anyway, its probably the inside gears so the case will need to be split.

atc330: are you positive the gears are different? Here is a link to a '84 200x and a '85 200x on partsfish, hard to tell what gears is what, but they look the same.

very postive; ever hear the school of hard knocks. i sent there. had my 200x apart 3/4 times with the kicker sh$ter. inside gears more teeth . shaft longer. end of shaft on the outside gear housing has a roller bearing. gears on outside ???? outside gear cover again roller bearing for the end of kicker shaft. know as 85 update. 83/84 no roller bearing at end of shaft, so shaft is shorter, inside gears less teeth. seem like there was something diffrent about the return spring???? they will interchange , but you have to change the whole works. i mixed up the inter gears, outcome both set now have chipped teeth. they were trying to climb over each other, chipped tooth. 85 250r has a bad kicker gear problem
