Does anyone know how many Ah I need for a battery to run on my trike. I got a cell from a UPS unit thats 12v 17Ah. Is 17 amp hours week or to strong?

I think you will find that the amps are to low and it may burn out starter. It requires a lot of amps to crank an eng. over. called cold cranking amps, the inishal amps required to turn over starter.
with out that rateing it may not work.:D

I ended up going out in the garage last night and looking through the Service Manuel and found that is uses a 14Ah battery. The 17Ah one I have might be a bit to strong. I wouldn't want to damage the CDI ignition, unless someone can tell me it won't! 17 dosent seem like it's alot more when you can upgrade your cars cold cranking amps.

I am the Design Engineer for Yuasa Battery in Reading, PA

First off, you don't want to use a UPS battery for engine starting, they can't handle the large, quick drain.

Secondly, a 12 volt motorcycle battery of any Amp Hour size technically will work, no problem.

Amp Hours, in particular your being a 14 amp hour....means it can support 1.4 amps for a total of 10 hours (thus a 14 amp/hour battery). All batteries are tested at the 10 hour rate.
I plain terms...if you leave your lights on, without the trike running, a smaller amp hour battery will die quicker.

Cold Cranking, is the ability to deliver a large amp draw, at 0 degrees F, down to a certain voltage, in a given time period.
your 14 amp hour battery is probably 190 CCA.

Other things such as high rate capacity, low rate capacity, and reserve capacity all going into determining the electrical capabilities of a battery.

Here is my suggestion....buy what it spec'ed for the trike (it will obviously fit the best)

Always charge your battery if left stored for long periods of time.

Cool, dry place id the best environment for a battery.

Maintenance-Free batteries are the way to go !!

In 1985 Honda started using MF batteries, and are 100% using M-F batteries today in all Cycles, ATV's, Scooters, etc.

If you have a Big Red, it takes a YB14A-A2....it was my project to revive our old, discontinued M-F battery called the YMF14L-2.....and when i did so, i designed it with more cranking and the ability to replace all YB14 ATV batteries.
You really need to get one, it just came out this week....literally.
It is called the YTX14AH-BS

Wow I can't belive Alan250SX, you know your **** I was about to give the same lesson but not quite as much detailed. As for using your truck battery, thats not such a good idea, it will work for how long is the question. a 12 volt 500CCA car batt will eventually burn out something most likely your starter. If your that lazy you should give me your trike:D

Great explanation!:hail:
The Reason why I have the UPS cell is only because it failed testing in our gear at work. Hard to say how many hours are on it.
I'll have to go buy the right one, but when you see something for free, and it will work.... :)
I have a Yamaha 225DR. The book says GMA14AZ-4A/12V, 14AH. Could you use a nicad cell pack or is the charge rate on those to high for generator?

That GM14AZ... or whatever, crosses to a Yuasa YB14A-A1, which is the same physical size as the one in the Big Red and other ATV's used today, for Yamaha, Polaris, Arctic Cat, Kawasaki and Suzuki.
Once again, the new YTX14AH-BS is the sealed replacement for it.
It of course is going to be more expensive than the regular version.
But even if you don't want to spend the extra cash, you can probably pick up a YB14A-A1 as Walmart for cheap.

You know what i use UPS batteries for around my house....
My shed where i keep my tractor and other yard stuff has no electricity...so i have a car headlight hooked to a battery and a switch...i have been doing that for 10 years, works great.

as far as boosting from your truck...that can be acceptable, if you follow these rules...
Never hook the car battery directly to the ATV starter motor.

When you boost an ATV, hook from the car battery to the terminals of the ATV battery. The ATV battery will absorb any in-rush of current.

But most importantly, never have the car/truck running when you boost a Motorcycle/ATV battery the current from the car's alternator is too much.

Just the car battery by itself will have enough extra juice to start your ATV.

I have already boosted my tractor battery, with a little scooter battery, just for that extra oompf i need to turn it over.
Then since the tractor battery was dead anyway, i took out that monster, and put in the little scooter battery. I ran it all weekend that way, no problems. I have a 14HP V-twin Briggs motor in my tractor, but that fully charger scooter battery, with probably only 50CCA, kicked it right over.
Then i went to work on Monday and got a new battery for free :-)
Ahhh, the perks !!

Yes i get that from my friend all the time about jumpung from a car. She works for avid, a battery distribtor, but im not hooking the jumpers to the starter and i only have a little toy. so the battery in that isnt that big, and as for 500 cold cranking amps, thats nothing, i have a snowmobile that has a 550 cca battery in here and shell kill it in a good min. flat if she wont start, Stupid yamahas, and then it runs like crap because it needs a battery to run, Stupid yamahas. But thanx for the information. ill be going and getting me a battery at wallyworld soon

I gotta give you some slack cuz your a fellow wallyworld shopper but I am gonna tell you something, first of all yamahas dont need a battery to run, they will run fine without one for a short time untill you overload the stater and burn it out.
