Its cold enough here that we have 4-5 inches of ice on the lakes, but not enough snow for my snowmobile:( I was thinking i could find a set of old tires in the back of the shop and slap them on my trike then go down to the cycle shop and get some atv ice studs. Anyway my question is: What is the proper ratio for these front/back. My instinct tells me to put more in the front so it doesnt just push the front wheel around and you wont have any turning ability. Also how many is a good number, and does anybody have any tips on putting them in? Thanks for your help.

Proper ratio of Studs in the tires, is that what youre talking about?? It depends on the style of the tires and the width of them. People usualyl just put them in a straight line, 3/4 to 1 inch apart.

Just looked in the shop, and couldnt find any tires that will hold air, so im not sure what size im going to be running. I guess whatever I can find in the used tire pile at the cycle shop. What i need to know is do you put more studs in the front tire than you do in the rears. Maybe it wont make a difference, I dont know. Any answers? Also never put them in before, so do you screw them in from the inside or outside and so you have to put any sealant around them? I know that may be a dumb question, but I honestly dont know.

There are no hard and fast rules. I think I probably have more in the front tire on my 250R simply because it is bigger around. If you were ice racing, you would want a lot of screws- at least one per knob. I prefer to put fewer so that I can still spin 360's and also easily kick the rear around tight corners. To put them in, get a variable speed drill and a magnetic bit/driver the same size as your screws. Put them in from the outside. I use 1/2" screws in tires that have a reasonable amount of tread left. I have used 3/8" screws in a worn front tire but they wouldn't stay in a rear very long. You can also use 1 inch screws that will go all the way through and then put Slime in the tire but I've never tried that myself. DON'T put them in a straight line in the rear tires or they will just dig grooves in the ice and lose traction. Stagger them as much as possible. It doesn't matter in the front because it won't be spinning.

By the way, where in Iowa are you?

actually, if you screw them all the way in, I doubt they would leak.

We run ice screw in our tires for drag racing, when putting them in I always pu them in an angle with the topf to the screw pointing to the fron of the bike. but not to much, just a little bit of tilt to it. this stops them from being ripped out when accelerating real have. and I would but them in, in a zig zag style. good luck.

hey, with winter coming, i going to make a new set of studded tires. I got a set of yamaha radials, with 72 1/4"bolts in each tire for sale. They work great, but not need anymore. You have to run tubes with them, but it works quite well. I spent over $40 for all the bolts, nylon locknuts and washers. There is some tread left on the tires, and like I said, they work great. I tried to do a doughnut in about 6-8" of snow, and they just dug right thru to the dirt, couldn't do it. On the road, hardpacked snow and ice, just jab the throttle, front end right up, no spinnin. Dan, these are trike related pics i would say, if they do not meet the requirements, i apologize. delete them, and everyone can email me to gt the pics sent to them. I still can't get my webpage up and running, been workin at it. I want $50 for the tires(u pay shipping) BTW the rims DO NOT GO WITH THEM!:D
This was a post while back.... I still have them for sale

Cool... I'm down in Des Moines. Just started to ride again.
I use to live over in the Quad and have been to Clinton.
Anyways.. I know I'm off the subject.

for ice racing on my tecate i put 450 gold series studs in each of the rear tires, 22x11x10's, and 350 in the front tire, which was stock. on my 400ex that im going to be racing this winter, i have 500 gold series studs in the rear, and 300 in each of the fronts, i use 1/2 inch studs, that are .05 cents each, i have also ran canadian studs, which are 2 inches long, and have stud tops of an inch long, but on these you have to put rubber blocks on the inside of the tire, or like i did, cut up a rear sprint car tire, and screw the studs into that, made the tire very hard, but also had alot of traction, that was on my motorcycles though.

The cheap cheng shin non-dimpled knobby tires work well. thats what most racers use. you'll be using anywhere from 250-500 per rear tire depending on how serious you wanna be. 1/2 or 5/8 gold pros work good. Usually run 2 studs in each knob on the cheng shins in the back.
