It is alright that I put a topic about a quad in here right? It will have an ATC motor in it.....please read.
Alright, here's the situation:
I bought an 87 250R TRX complete quad minus motor, radiator, and wiring harness and a few other parts that I haven't noticed yet (I am building this for my girlfriend). I have an 85 ATC 250R motor that I picked up really cheap (was a spare motor for my 85 ATC 250R).
QUESTION 1: The gearing in the 85 5spd tranny will that support the TRX weight and make it rideable? (I don't want it to be a slug out there since I will ride it too.) I heard that the tranny's in the ATC are not as strong and the gearing isn't right for a TRX. I think it will do fine since my ATC will kick the crap out of my friends TRX's (he has 2, 1 for him, 1 for his girlfriend).
My TRX frame had some 500cc 4 stroke motor in it (air cooled) that was blown up and not repairable. The motor cradle area of the TRX frame was all cut out and changed to accomidate that 4 stroke. I have to replace bars and strengthen areas that were cut out for that motor, and fit the 2 stroke motor back in.
QUESTION 2: What is the best way to mount the motor back in? I just bought all new motor mounts, so should I bolt the rear motor cradle to the frame / swing arm then bolt the motor to that and go from there? I think that is the only mount that won't have to be completely refabricated to the frame. Also at this time should I have my chain and sprockets in place so I know that they are straight with no clearance problems?
Once I put the motor in and make sure everything is alright I need to mount the radiator and cooling system. That should be fairly easy. Then it's on to wiring the beast.
QUESTION 3: Since I will have an 85 ATC motor in a 87 TRX frame, will I need a ATC wiring harness, or a TRX wiring harness? Things that I am unsure of are if the CDI, or coil and spark wire have changed with the year of the motors, or if the length of the wire in the harness will be to short or to long (I'd rather have all the functioning parts of the harness and I'll wire them again myself than have the right length of wire, but wrong parts.)
After I get everything together and make the quad functional, I'll tear it down again to repaint and overall clean it up and make it look presentable with new plastics, and some chrome. Of course by the time I get this far she'll probably dump me:rolleyes: :lmao:
Thanks for your time
