Has anyone had any experience with this swap of complete engines? If so what alterations needed to be made to accomodate the larger engine?
The "Something to think about" thread did just that...makin' me think:demon:

As I said in a previous post, Its not that bad of a swap but its not easy either. Mine isn't done yet, and I'm not sure when it'll be done. I'm setting mine up with CR500 suspension all the way around (89 Inverted forks on the front) and a Progressive CR500 shock on the rear. I have to make a new swingarm, tripple clamps, ect and other minor things for the suspension system. I can understand the not wanting to hack up a good frame idea, but mine wasn't really a good one to start with. I consider doing what I did as saving it. I think anyone with a fairly good mechanical skills and some time, effort and of course green stamps could do one. I'm being really anal about mine, so its taking a while. Plus I'm outa cash...for now ;)

350xhiliartion.....heres an idea from my book for ya:
XR400 DirtBike....Custom or Fitted 350X/400ex swingarm & a 350X or 250R front end....boom: 400EX 3 wheeler.
Ditto using an XR500, 600, 650 (whatever).
Good luck with whatever ya do,
Rob

Converting a Bike to a trike??? like that white 350X in Dirt Wheels a few months ago?? Nice idea, just not a viable option for me at this stage. Thanks for input anyway.

That idea was more of a concept than a proven technique---Right now Im doing a little research on the measurements between the 350X swinger & the XR350 Swinger----If youre interested, I can share them with ya.

In the March 95 Dirt Wheels there is a 500x motor in a trx250r that is based on 350x motor. Four Stroke Tech used a 79-81 XR500 (non RFVC) head for better valves and flow over 350's. The cylinder was bored for a 97mm piston and cases machined for clearance. Kept stroke stock. It had a 36 mikuni carb and reworked advance curve for CDI. When you go that big though you should get a heavy duty rod.

Would anyone happen to have a scan of this article or any updates on their project? A friend of mine has a complete 81 XR 500. He also has another complete top end. He's going to check what parts he has and let me know if he will part with them.
Talk about bringing back a dead thread:doh:

i can email you a scan of the article. the main problem with running the bigger motors is they're taller which makes it harder to fit inside the frame without cutting. you might be better off using the 350x cylinder, resleeved for the bigger pistons (90-97mm), and or stroke it, then using the xr head. that way the motor should be about the same height.

If you could scan and email it to the account associated with my user here...that would be great...I may not do it, just some info for the future in the event of a beat 350X coming along that I wouldnt mind cutting up. Mine will prolly never get cut. Too nice.

Kind of ironic this thread brought up. Last winter My friend aqquired a "big bore kit" off ebay. The guy claimed that it was all custom with a stroker crank. The auction was just for the cylinder and piston, but after the auction the guy found the crank as well, so he threw it in with the cylinder. ANYWAY... This so called kit was a custom job, they took a 350X jug, and made a XR500 Sleeve fit in it...I thought no way in hell would this thing ever work. However, he got the kit, milled the cases to fit the bigger sleeve, and installed the crank.
WOW that thing had some power, and it was in a 250X frame, with R suspension all the way around. He is currently rebuilding it(blew a hole in piston) I could get some info from him if I knew exactly what you are looking for:thumbsup:

I have 3 1982 XR500's. On of them has a fresh bore and 10.5 to 1 piston. I haven't even got it back together yet. Looks like I need a 350X now.

they need to be non RFVC, so 81-82 or whenever that was.
350xhilleration, do you still want a scan of that article? its only like a page and a half long. let me know
