I am in the process of rebuilding my stock 200X motor and have got a few questions. I heard about putting in a XR 200 cam in a 200x motor. Is that a good idea or should I just get a Web cam? I will also be boring the engine out to about .030 If I do this to my motor will I have to adjust anything else or will it be good to go as is? (i.e. valves, carb??) I'm new to the whole engine mod thing so I'm a little confused with the whole "if you do this to the motor, you also have to do this" thing. Any help would be appreciated.

RD---Your parts that you bought from me off eBay are goign out tomorrow...couldnt make it to USPS today,

Yes, You can put an Xr200 Cam in it. It is performance mod and its worth it. Its up to you whether to find a used xr one for cheap or get a brand new webcam for more.

Tell me more about this conversion. Do you know any specs or durations?.

Also what year 200x will it work on 83-85? 86-87? 83-87?

What year xr will fit?.

I know you can use a 200x cam in a 185s/200s motor. So does this mean you can use a xr200 cam in one of them also for a real big mod?.

I think (actually I know) theres an article on 200x "hop ups" in the article section of the site.

It works on 83-85...theres no reason to do it to 86/87's....theyre already XR200's!!

You can use the cam from a 1986-up XR200 for more mid-to-top power.

Using the '86-up XR piston will give you 10:1 compression ratio versus the stock 9.6:1 .....Wiseco also makes a piston kit with 10.25:1 compression. Use it if you want a forged piston, ..and go with the Honda if you prefer cast and "factory" reliability.

Use the carburetor from the '86-up XR200. It's 26mm. The 200X was 24mm

If you use this carburetor, you will need a '80-'84XR200[Non-R] intake manifold to match the new carburetor. This one has a larger inside diameter than the 200X. Honda part# 16210-446-000 This older XR intake will allow the late model XR carburetor to mount in the stock location. The '86-up intake will not work.

Is there a cam I could use in my 200x that would increase power on the bottom end?

A lower compression piston would be good for bottom end on anything......but I dont suggest anything BUT gearing and/or re-jetting trying to get more bottom end on a 4 stroke....especially a 200x. They have fine lowend....more than you need really.

Don't use a cam from a 84 or 85 xr200 they were a RFVC motor-different design. High compression is actually better for low RPM performance but I wouldn't go over 10:1 without running 100 octane or better.
