Picked up a 1984 70 the other day.. Got it for 100$. Did some reasearch, cleaned the carb/tank(screen was full of rust), put new points/ condenser, put new wiring on it, New oil, cleaned filter, I got a used head for 50$ on ebay because the one on mine had a stripped spark plug hole. Anyways got it runing for about 170$ total. It runs good, maybe could use some rings. Im happy for now though 29775

Oh and it shifts a little funky. I messed with the clutch a little bit and it helped. Still doesnt like to shift some times though. Im thinking the shift drum stopper arm/ plate may be messed up? It will shift back into a lower gear just fine every time though.

Have you changed the oil yet? If so try that first. The engine and trans share oil so a good 10w-30 should be ok for ya. I run a synthetic in my 82 ATC70 and it does just fine. Also if you need some parts for it look into DrATV.com they carry alot of the 70 parts there.
Oh BTW......Welcome

yeah i used Lucas semi synthetic 10w-40.. good enough? It looked like the old oil inside of it may have been original, no joke lol.

10w-40 will be fine. Run it for a while to see if the trans frees up some. My have to change the oil once or twice before it gets bett

I checked my points today and they were almost closed.. Opened them up to about .15 and now it actually pulls 2nd and 3rd gear up hill! lol. 4th is still weak I ordered new rings and full gasket kit. The oil is getting contaminated with gas, wondering if that can cause shifting issues? Im hoping its just a head gasket and not a crank seal.

If it's fuel then it is going past the rings. Pull it apart first to see if it needs a jug before you order all the parts that you don't need.
