I got a 1984 ATC 70 that runs good, no rust in tank but needs 2 rear tires. The 85 suppose to have tranny problems, I only paid $ 50. for it. It will be getting the Piranha electric start 150 motor, & alot of other mods. I built a rolling work table today to make things easier.

John I have the Black Handle Bars seen in these picture that I would sale to you cheap because I went to a taller bar because I'm 6'-6" and needed more leg clearance. They are like brand new if your interested?

New 7" Aluminum wheels with Tires coming for one, & New stock tires coming for the other one. Started tearing one down to clean up, Adjust things, & paint. Still getting a build direction put together for the other one. I can see already the second ATC 70 is going to be a little money pit. It should be a real kick in the pants to ride when its done.

New wheels & tires here, New stock tires here. New wide fiberglass tank is here. Got some clean up & painting done to the one thats going to stay stock " for now ". Finally got to ride one of them, now i have a worm trail track in my side yard. Now its time to tear it down completely & finish cleaning & painting. Then I get to start building the other one. :D

319633196431965Well first mock up of my 2nd build is done. I wired in push button starter by clutch lever. Push button kill switch in center nut of forks. And a key switch that will be mounted in frame just under & slightly behind left front seat bolt. There was just alittle trimming of the frame in four different spots to get the piranha 150 E-start in. I mounted the light weight Antigravity battery that weighs 3/4 of a pound, in the frame along with the rectifier. I mounted the starter solenoid on the outside of the frame behind left front seat bolt up high so its just under the rear fender. The G-force hubs worked out great. I have a set of skat-trac 16x8-7 Exciter paddles on the shelf waiting for another set of 7x6 aluminum wheels. Fired it up tonight and rode it down the street a few times. Awesome power, Its a wheelie demon in all 4 gears. Now I need to tear it down and stretch the frame 2", Move the tank up 1 1/2 inches, & move the seat up 1". Then off to the powder coaters.

3230732308323093231032311Well my frame is done. 2" Frame Stretch, Gas tank is moved forward 1 1/2", & Seat & rear fender is moved forward 1". I was able to find some pipe that was on the thick side that I had milled down to fit inside the stock frame tube. After milling, pipe is just a little thicker then the frame pipe. I also went back to where I got this pipe and bought enough to do 4 more frames, One never knows just how hard he has bin bitten. I also decided since I had plenty of room for my carb, That I would put a 1 3/4" filler piece of pipe that is the same size as the frame back in for more strength. I left 1/8" gap at each end so all 3 pieces of pipe could be welded at the same time. I chose to slip inner pipe 3 1/2" in on each side of frame pieces, & drilled 1/4" plug holes "4 on each end that are staggered toward the end of the extended pipe" to be plug welded for more strength.
This is how I chose to extend my frame. I feel that it is strong enough. I am in no means saying that this is the right way to do this. "This is how I did mine". With that said here are some pic's.

Hey John Jr, Where did you get the rims from? I would like to get me some. 70 is looking mighty fine.
I got them from Sterdy Products. They are 7x6 160 wall rims. He seems to sell these as fast as he gets them in. I also just got another set that I mounted a pair of 16x8x7 skat trak exciter paddles on. If you get a set, a little heads up on them. When they make these wheels it looks like they pay more attention to the outside half of the wheel. Its pretty true to round. the enter half is not as true. That being said, Pick the best rim for your front tire since you can see both sides. Rear tires you only see one side.

yeah that is very true. im thinking in getting just the rears ones or get an 8x6 wheel set there is a lot of more choices. ill see what happens. lol

Also, If I remember right the stock ATC 70 tires do not fit these rims. Because stock tires are made for spit rims. I got the tire and wheel combo from Sterdy Products.

Just dropped everything off at the powder coaters, Even took the wife's front and rear grab bars off her 2010 YFZ 450R SE in for some gold powder. It will match the gold lettering on her quad. I'm hoping if she see's that, she won't notice all the other new stuff thats been showing up in the garage the last 2 months.

How are you going about mounting the rear of the seat/fender to the frame? I ordered some 8mm x 1.25 nut serts to put in the frame for the front, and was thinking about making a spacer that bolts to the fender using the stock studs and is 1 1/2" with 2 additional studs to mount into the stock angled flange.
John jr
04-12-2012, 08:19 PM
I cut the front of the back seat mount loose from the frame & used 2 ratchet straps to pull it forwards 1", Then welded it back to the frame. If you look at the above top left pic you can see that the back seat mount is bent forward. Then on the front seat mount, I drilled 2 holes 1" forward of the back holes and am only useing the back 2 studs thru my new holes to bolt the seat mount to the seat. NOTE THIS WILL move the front bottom of your rear fender closer to your footpeg. I have new footpegs that are 2" forward of stock, plus I have race cut fenders so my heel of my boot does not catch the fender. If your gas tank is off, you can scoot your rear fender & seat forward & see if you can live with the new arrangement.

I bought an unfinished project with a 3" extended frame, and the fuel tank moved back 3" I did not like the look of the frame sticking out, so I moved the tank forward 2" and I plan on moving the seat 1 1/2" by drilling new holes in the frame 1 1/2" forward up front. I also moved my footpegs forward 2". I can see in the pics how you bent the rear bracket forward now. It is getting a 140cc Lifan, and I want to get more weight on the front tire. Thanks for the info. Murf

The one I am building now I stretched 3". I moved the tank back 1 1/2" from the original front mounts and am gonna extend the seat forward 1 1/2" to match it up. I left my fenders in the stock position. Planning a Lifan as well but I went with Gordy's foot brake and pegs.
Here is how mine lines up

That is looking awesome; I'm very jealous to say the least and excited to see this come together. As for the powdercoating, what could a guy expect to pay for that, approx? I seen that you did your own sandblasting first, or did they have to do more prep?

My powder coater sand blasted everything I brought to him. I just removed most of the paint for him to keep his sand cleaner. As for price I brought him 12 peice's to do. A few things I took him were off my wifes Quad. I had a few things that took 3 different steps, So my price was alittle high. $ 310. for everything I took to him.

I just checked out that listing on that other 70 you sent me. Thats a heck of a deal, but I'm going to have to pass on that on. With 7 days at the raptor rally coming up & 16 days at winchester bay in july for my family vacation, & needing to put a new roof on my house money is going to be tight. Plus the guy I've been building houses for for the last 20 yrs is done building.
