although the '86 forks were a little beefier I think they are internally the same.

I've been told a blaster shock will work fine and maybe also a warrior or banshee shock. I haven't tried it personally though.

Yamaman, you can find all the parts schematics online at www.partsfish.com
The front suspension was different on the 86, they switched the tire size from 25" to 23" and increased the travel on the front forks. As far as the rear suspension, I've heard Warrior rear shocks bolt right on, Blaster's will fit with a bit of modification, but I've never tried either one personally. Hope that helps you out.

are the forks internally different? I know the parts aren't the same, I just meant that the way they're designed I think they're the same.

I wonder if anyone has actually done the rear shock swap that could tell us for sure what will work and how easily?
